Clickthrough Parameter

Values added to a URL after a link (Webgains tracking link) has been clicked through, typically used for tracking and reporting.

  • ‘wgu’, ‘wgexpiry’ are clickthrough parameters added by Webgains, by default, which enables us to drop our cookie and track conversions via affiliate referral.

  • UTM Parameters are specifically used by Google Analytics (as well as some other attribution platforms) for identifying the traffic source and related referral data.

Click Target URL

The URL that has been specified as a destination for any user who clicks a specific link

Commission

The amount paid to an affiliate for driving a sale, lead, or other desired action for the merchant. It is usually a percentage of the sale value or a fixed fee per lead.

Conversion Rate (CR)

The percentage of visitors who take the desired action (e.g., making a purchase) through an affiliate link. Calculated as number of sales divided by clicks x 100.

A small data file stored on a user’s device to track their online activity. In affiliate marketing, cookies are used to track when a user clicks on an affiliate link and subsequently makes a purchase.

Webgains use a 1st Party Cookie in order to identify when a user has made a visit from an affiliate site, so we are able to identify when the Webgains network is involved in user journey/purchase.

Cookie Period

The lifespan of the cookie. Once the cookie period expires, it will no longer be available to Webgains attribution process and thus not able to track.

Webgains cookie period can be configured within the advertiser’s program settings.

Deep Linking

A link that takes the user directly to a specific page or product on the merchant's website, rather than just the homepage, enhancing user experience and potentially increasing conversion rates.

Earnings Per (Hundred) Click (EPC/EPHC)

The average earnings for every one hundred clicks that an affiliate generates for a particular program. For merchants, an affiliate’s EPHC displays how well each affiliate is sending relevant traffic to the merchant's websites. For affiliates, a merchant's EPHC shows how well that merchant’s traffic converts into actual sales or leads. This indicator is only to be used as a rough guide and not an exact calculation

Effective Cost Per Acquisition/Action (eCPA)

The metric used to measure the effectiveness of advertising purchased  by the advertiser via a cost per click, cost per impression or cost per thousand bases. Calculated as total spend divided by number of sales or conversions.

Effective Cost Per Mille (eCPM)

Used within Post View Reporting. The cost per thousand views, calculated by dividing commission by views and multiplying by 1000.

GA (Google Analytics)

Google offers its own Analytics platform that a website can use to track and report on site traffic and events. Many Webgains advertisers will use GA as part of their sales and attribution reporting, to help check the source of the sale.

Server-to-Server Tracking

An alternative/additional tracking method to standard cookie tracking. Server-to-Server (S2S) tracking is a robust method for managing attribution and recording transactions, and allows advertisers to directly communicate conversion data from their servers to Webgains' API endpoint, bypassing the limitations of client-side tracking methods.

When a user clicks on a tracking link or generates an ad impression, a unique identifier is generated and stored, and then matched to the user when they make a conversion.

Script

A script broadly speaking is a piece of code in any programming language.

At Webgains, we refer to ‘script’ in two instances; our Landing Page Script, and our Conversion Script. Both are pieces of code advertisers add to their site that enable us to track conversions. The landing page script sets our Webgains cookie, and the conversion script will send us sales data, if a user makes a purchase whilst our cookie is present (I.e., from a Webgains affiliate referral).

Tenancy

A fixed payment agreement where a merchant pays an affiliate a set fee for a specific period to feature their products or promotions prominently on the affiliate's platform. This arrangement guarantees exposure, regardless of traffic or sales generated.
