# Why do I get a 422 error 'filters must be an array' in the API?

Firstly, ensure you have checked against our [documentation](https://docs.webgains.dev/docs/platform-api-1/g9w1vaa6wyll3-quick-start-with-the-webgains-smart-platform-api)for the endpoint that you are using, and that you have used the correct **IDs**(affiliate ID / campaign ID respectively where required in the API).

If you are receiving an error similar to the below when using filters in one of our Publisher Platform API endpoints:

**422 error: "The attribute filters.networks must be an array."**

In this case, the filter should be like;

`filters[networks][]=8`

(i.e. *not* like `filters[networks]=[8]`)

Additional examples for **correctly formatting adding a query parameter:**

**Reporting API with filtering:**

`?filters[campaign_ids][]=123`

So it is equivalent to:

    filters: {
      campaign_ids: [123],
    }

With multiple filters, it would be like:

`filters[campaign_ids][]=1068&filters[campaign_ids][]=1097`

Use **interactive charts and data tables** to filter and explore your data by campaign, publisher channel type, or commission scheme, giving you the flexibility to uncover new opportunities and maximise [ROI](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/glossary.md#Return-on-Investment-(ROI)).

Below is an overview of what our new Performance Reports have to offer, and how you can use them to elevate your reporting on your Webgains program.

*** ** * ** ***

## Overview

The Performance report is made up of 6 tabs -- the main **Performance report** which provides charts breaking down performance by publisher, channels, countries, commission, ads and products.

The **Details** tab provides the details on each transaction and the products within each transaction.

Then, there are a few different **Comparison** tabs. The **Performance Comparison** page provides comparisons between the current month, this week vs last week, year on year, the current month vs the same month last year, and **custom**comparisons.

Following this are **Publishers by day** , **Products by Publisher** , and **Publishers** **by Product**. Each allows an in depth comparison for each metric.

## Performance Report Tab

This page provides a range of different tables and charts covering different dimensions of a program/s performance. As with other pages on the advertiser platform, you're able to report on one or multiple programs combined in these reports (using the program dropdown in the top nav).

### Filtering

At the top of the page are the filters which are used to determine the range of transactions and clicks the reports are applied to. By **default** , the **dates** will be set to the show data for the current month to date. The **granularity** of the data can be set between a day and a calendar year.
![image-20241121-103803.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_3ef8a3cefd62fb2859cd3910cb69f69b9bb64d57ede7719d6c1c18ecfad5f2b6/image-20241121-103803.png?cb=f4e670e40704cd4e146508f878140367)
![image-20250106-143548.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_94f9e3eee7dfe49db2f90714601c0a6379d77730a0d3e02d3e6fe811d359803e/image-20250106-143548.png?cb=d475e7086995a442e4d3d3d14c69f0ef)

You can Edit the time range and select 'Previous', 'Last', and 'Current' to view standard timeframes. (For example, 'Last' month). Or, select Custom to add the specific dates you would like to report on.

The time range will be displayed after your selection.

The **status** is the status of the transactions is another filter that can be used. By **default**these are all the Confirmed and Delayed transactions. Cancelled transactions are excluded by default but can also be enabled.
![image-20250106-143730.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_6e9e2fa632825b8f5fd71efe5b381076f99534b25c1f3c1a36475c995a430984/image-20250106-143730.png?cb=73524a98252e083338e0026f27b2cb18)

The **Groups**enable you to filter by the program's custom Publisher Groups.

Publisher Groups can be set up within a program to allow for custom groups that an advertiser may wish to filter reporting by.
![image-20250106-143937.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_36491ad1d5aaa22ac6f612aa06d1c6c16d05e2ca410ef080e6fc3ebbd4a8081a/image-20250106-143937.png?cb=a7a68b621c9c51a235e38200646551e8)

If you have already selected the Groups filter, then the Publisher filter will update to reflect the publishers added in the selected groups.
![image-20250218-155420.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_0b022a74e53ef50251226ff3a530e98112bd089e77d3bd29f7a7ea4cec03b4dd/image-20250218-155420.png?cb=c8466bb2aa6c8215b62d05fbf6981c49)

You can also filter by Transaction Country. This reflects the ++tracked++ country for the transaction.
![image-20251002-151258.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_01dcc8a8c2b9837ca722399ec6816096040b2e12bb8b8f2587c8e62e94425d04/image-20251002-151258.png?cb=790fc229ed4073004cf7e83d69fb4d4d)

All of these filters apply across the Performance Report and Details tab. However, only the **Groups** and **Status**are available and apply filters on the Performance Comparison.

### KPIS

At the top of the page you will find a selection of KPIs to view.

### Using the Charts to filter the Performance Report

Each of these panels enables you to filter the whole of the report based on a specific dimension. On the performance table, for example, clicking on a single row will filter the data to cover just that date.
![image-20241122-101224.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_d55fdb411cb501594b876ce6b31945791cba02049f1dd30a1ddd2ac079532334/image-20241122-101224.png?cb=3a4123dbf17c533ea64bc488b8ba6062)

Clicking on a segment of a pie chart will filter the page to just that data segment.
![image-20250211-112130.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_21eddf4e3ab62d6478b71b292975d960ea96174c938f5053ead7bff305dfb668/image-20250211-112130.png?cb=7e002790e6e16d2df56b4153208a4fe4)

These filters are then shown at the top of the page and can be removed by clicking the x next to them
![image-20250211-112238.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_49504bb72394f3aaea0b730a5535a120c729a573996d38fd2c062f5acc16ee4b/image-20250211-112238.png?cb=38cbc06b647aadca4afc1d9659d94839)

### Downloading Data

The data from each of the table or chart can also be viewed as a table, or downloaded by clicking on the 3 dots in the top right of each panel:
![image-20250211-112213.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_7c3e7848bd6179dee5b13ad0726d0646c0c2e865e381900bf5403a18708f61eb/image-20250211-112213.png?cb=3f5482f0e573ef6ab68072fb44a0c24b)

## Details Tab

On the Details tab, you can see a detailed breakdown of transactions based on the selected date range. For each transaction, you can see info about the ad, the campaign and the publisher that the transaction is attributed to.

The items table enables you to dive even deeper into each transaction breaking down each transaction into the items/products within it and showing more info on the commission scheme and any voucher codes that have been applied.

Both the transactions and the items table can be searched to find specific records, even if they don't appear in the list (as the list is limited), allowing you to search by order reference, and campaign name if the transaction appears as part of that filtered view.

## Comparison Tab

The comparisons tab provides a range of fixed comparisons for different date ranges - the month to date vs the previous month, week to date vs last week, year to date vs last year and current month vs the same month last year. In addition, users can set custom date ranges depending on the periods they wish to compare. See below for further guidance on this.

The report shows the Sales, Clicks and Commission values for these comparisons as well as the top Publishers and channels and their change over the compared periods.

Red denotes a downward trend and Green an upward trend.

### Creating a Custom Comparison

On the Custom comparison sub-tab, you can create performance comparisons for against a comparison period in the past.

Firstly the date range of the current or most recent period and then set the **Comparison Start Day** to the first day of the period in the past you want to compare to.
![image-20250218-160014.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_e62f42e6440d27bbe757a2838f0798a68a4f03581592e6086f918cd9f1614fcc/image-20250218-160014.png?cb=2129756e63a295b57c31fcc5ab6c5093)

For example, if you want to compare the performance of December 2024 with December 2023:

1. You would set the **Dates** to a **Custom range** with a**Specific Date/Time** of 2024-12-01 to 2025-01-01

2. Then set the **Comparison Start Day** to**2023-12-01** and click **Apply**.

3. When you select Apply this will compare the currently selected period (e.g. the current month) to the same duration in the past starting from the **Comparison Start Day.**

   Here's a quick video demonstration:

[20250219-1641-47.5480459.mp4](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_e7fa5452c829e2ac2ee2e354311c8ad9da1c32ce53c52ae81647a93524c88f5b/20250219-1641-47.5480459.mp4.md)
*Demo Account Data*
To note, when checking the custom comparison **graph** , the **black** bar will show the current date/time period, and the **yellow** bar will show the compared period. For the report labelling, "inherit" will refer to the compared period.
![image-20250226-145546.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_be3550ff7982a1bbbca1f554907a9e8e66fbb531405997b0dc301b294b28adfe/image-20250226-145546.png?cb=980ef930be01364d50394875a3d1b029)

## Publishers Performance by Day

![image-20250218-160500.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_98cb0cd593b59d82d91f55f953c4673f5ed759eba4c5c4f214431c36a8e361d5/image-20250218-160500.png?cb=30ae2f5ce7e6838f95c4a34b964a93de)

This report shows how each publisher has performed each day over a particular period. You can expand out each Publisher to see their performance.

## Products by Publisher and Publishers by Product

These two reports enable you to get more detail on how each publisher contributes to sales of particular products. This can viewed grouped by Publisher or by the products themselves

## Timezones

The new Performance Reports currently summarise each day based on UTC (GTM-0) time, while the older Webgains reports (Activity, Transaction) adjust the timezone based on your user settings. This means if you're based outside of the UK in a different timezone, you'll currently see some small differences between the new reports and the dashboard and activity report. For a direct comparison, you can change your timezone in the user settings in the top right.
![image-20250108-160338.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_4321103c1c802c7b106941ee211a2198ca616d7e5d89ac675bb568c1e941c353/image-20250108-160338.png?cb=ce4d24c405dec7c0d68fd2e4e05f848c)

## Currencies

The currencies for the report are defined by the currency shown in the top right and will adjust the figures based on the currency selected. Where multiple programs are selected the report will show all figures in a single currency and not the base currency of that program.
![image-20250108-152518.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_b07340c447eac71abc25fdbe2312439f1fc7438f371c58c2bc9004403d2126cd/image-20250108-152518.png?cb=4d220d9b9b3a994af987e3e4d9553d7d)

## Other FAQs

**Q:** Why does the Product Performance Charts show data, even though I do **not** have [product level tracking](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/webgains-default-tracking-guide.md#Step-4:-Items-Tracking) setup for my program?

**A:**If a program does not track products through their Webgains transactions, the sale itself will still count as an 'item' within the reporting. This is to ensure that we do not have discrepancies between the data. The 'Details' tab will count 1 Product per transaction, but if you expand further into the transaction details you should notice the product fields show data as N/A.
![image-20250109-130411.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_039899e1841f7650eff26bcce2171ec5bd3c5f4445fbc688e9f8e095cea96251/image-20250109-130411.png?cb=c8ee2acb52a9b44862eb9a8db596b3f9)

**Q:** What happened to the old performance reports?

**A:** The old performance reports have been retired and are no longer accessible through the platform. If you need access to data from the old reports, please contact [support@webgains.com](mailto:support@webgains.com).

**Q:** How do I access my scheduled performance reports?

**A:** Any previous Scheduled Reports that you had set up will still exist in the 'My Reports' page of the advertiser platform, where you can continue to edit and receive your existing scheduled reports.

It will currently not be possible to create new scheduled reports from the new Performance Report suite.

**Q:**What if I see 'Unverified' for a Publisher Channel type?

**A:** In some cases, if a Publisher has not set their Channel Type, you may see it displayed as 'Unverified' within the report pages. This just means that the publisher has not been categorised yet. If you require any assistance with a specific publisher please reach out to [publisherteam@webgains.com](mailto:publisherteam@webgains.com).

**Q:**How is ROI calculated?

**A:** [Return on Investment (ROI)](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/glossary.md#Return-on-Investment-(ROI)) is a measure of the profitability of an affiliate marketing campaign, calculated as **profit divided** by the total **cost**.

# Advertiser Platform - Batch Voucher Uploads

## New! Upload your Vouchers in Batch

Our new **Batch Voucher Upload** feature is designed for brands that need to issue **large volumes of single‑use voucher codes** quickly and securely.
![image-20260211-140701.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_f5acad6ff7024a467063e8b4aa97af1008c51f2a52a8c220fd8cbadf3837eb8e/image-20260211-140701.png?cb=3a71f7e9e07519b744a554cd7cb25568)

Instead of uploading vouchers one by one, you can now download and complete a simple template file, and then upload hundreds or thousands of vouchers in a single batch straight into the platform.
![image-20260211-140645.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_40809e73c6575f7d4d7814ee4fedb1ac2911952dc3f1bccffb1feaca3b94d95b/image-20260211-140645.png?cb=dfd9ac758c9ca60e7dee0a55617939f7)

This feature is designed for clients who regularly work with high voucher volumes, helping to enable:

* **Faster campaign activation**

Quickly supply large code sets for time‑sensitive promotions, flash sales, or partner pushes---without waiting on manual processing.

* **Ideal for closed user groups**

Easily support partners that require **unique codes per user** ,[such as health worker discounts, student programs, or employee benefits platforms.](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/closed-user-groups-and-rewards.md)

* **Stronger control and security**

Use **single‑use, non‑shareable codes** to protect your margin, and prevent codes leaking beyond the intended audience.

* **Reduced manual workload**

Cut down on repetitive data entry by managing codes in structured batches.

For full guidance on uploading Vouchers in bulk, please view: [How do I upload Vouchers to my program? \| Uploading Vouchers in Bulk](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/how-do-i-upload-vouchers-offers-to-my-program.md#Uploading-Vouchers-in-Bulk)

### Customer Type Reporting

The advertiser platform **Performance Report** has been updated to include an option that allows users to report on the **Customer Type**.

This new feature enhances the report's capabilities by providing more detailed insights into the different categories of customers interacting with the platform.

There is a new **filter**option available on the report pages, which allows users to refine the reports based on tracked Customer Types, improving the customisation and relevance of the data presented.

Additionally, the Customer Type information also appears as a dedicated **column** on the **Details**tab.
![image-20260312-093641.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_f22793181abbac94132b22b047b1b69d81046f5ad6dad94b87c07c7079b55e6e/image-20260312-093641.png?cb=96045c9f9d8d9193017bab4eb6d536d4)
**Reminder** : advertisers will need to send us the**Customer Type** within their [++tracking++](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/webgains-default-tracking-guide.md#Step-3:-Conversion-Script-Variables), in order to be able to report on this data. If tracked within transactions, the relevant data will be collected and displayed in the report.

# Advertiser Platform - May 2026 Updates

Our latest update to the advertiser platform includes an upgrade to our Product Feed interface, with a sleek design and consistency with the look of our new platform tools, as well as new advanced configuration options for Custom Data within Smart Commissions.

## Product Feeds - New look!

The Product Feeds page has been given a fresh new look, updated to be consistent with the style and design of our latest user interface. While the appearance has changed to match our modern aesthetic, all existing functionality and features will remain the same as before, ensuring a seamless experience for users.
![image-20260501-141909.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_5da5ef17141e42b50765676a22518bef6a1cc7e373e32fb6970546e03b7d3566/image-20260501-141909.png?cb=a24695b5f9e7fd7d2f23397fd2229eed)

## Custom Data in Smart Commissions - Advanced Configuration Options

We have added some new options in the [Custom Data section of Smart Commissions](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/creating-a-commission.md#Custom-data). These enhancements are designed to give you greater flexibility and control when setting up commission rules based on your custom data fields.

* The **'In list'** option enables you to define a commission rule that applies specifically when the custom data field matches one of a specified list of values. For example, you might use this to target a list of particular brands or countries. The commission rule will only be triggered when the custom data contains one of these listed values, allowing for precise and targeted commission configurations.

* The **'Not in list'** option allows you to set up a commission rule that applies to any value of the custom data field except for those specified in your exclusion list. This means the commission will be applied broadly, but will explicitly exclude the values you have listed. This feature provides an easy way to exclude certain brands, countries, or other custom data values from commission calculations, enhancing your ability to fine-tune commission rules.

# Advertiser Platform - New GenAI Invites

In our latest advertiser platform release, we introduce our new **GenAI Publisher Invites**feature.

## GenAI Publisher Invite

The GenAI publisher invite email experience allows users to create personalised publisher invitations using AI.

This release is available in both **Publisher Management** and **Discover**, supporting teams when inviting publishers to join an advertiser program.

Users can select ✨ **Generate Email**, review a generated preview, make any edits, and send the invite from a single consolidated drawer.
![image-20260804-113306.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_121904a8d0e0dc3abbcd558d0920d287bbbb292daf923edf12fdecd788f1e95e/image-20260804-113306.png?cb=f2b3946c89185596311b797c2c25df85)
![image-20260803-131101.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_b62c8a88db66160aefde3c31b49c44b1e80d01340d33fe9fc56d3939a085047c/image-20260803-131101.png?cb=6fe5a383c53400dd9eaa437210dc1ba0)

The invite is generated from the program assets already available in the platform, including the program description, commission rate details, cookie period, product feed, voucher codes, and other available promotional assets.

The AI grounds the email content in these available program details, helping produce relevant invite copy without requiring users to start from a blank email.
**Benefits for advertisers:**

* Recruit publishers faster with ready-to-review invite copy generated in seconds.

* Maintain a more consistent brand voice across outreach, while still allowing you to tailor each message.

* Create higher-quality invitations that make better use of available program assets, such as commission details, vouchers, product feeds, and promotional messaging.

* Reduce manual effort for account teams by removing the need to draft each invite from scratch.

* Make it easier to iterate and test different outreach approaches for different publisher segments.

* Improve time-to-activation by helping publishers receive clearer, more compelling program information sooner.

## Performance Report Updates

* We've added currency symbols to the KPIs and transaction tables on the Performance and Post-view reports for a clearer view of key performance figures.

* We've greatly simplified the date picker so that are fewer options.

# Advertiser Platform - Program Settings Update: Marketing Channels and Keywords

We have expanded the Program Settings area within the advertiser platform to include **Keyword Policy \& Restrictions.**

Use the updated **Marketing Channels and Keywords** tab in Program Settings to clearly define your PPC rules and keyword restrictions for publishers.
The former **Marketing tactics** tab is now called **Marketing Channels and Keywords** . Inside the tab, **Marketing tactics** is now **Marketing Channels**.
![image-20260903-090740.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_eb17c9fbce11830867f35f8fed1e86259e21ca00a90782980bb17351ac2c2ddc/image-20260903-090740.png?cb=c218d99e28ce14c9c3f4819c50ff3a45)

## What this means for advertisers

You can now manage PPC permissions and restricted keywords in one place, making it easier for publishers to understand which paid search activity is allowed on your program.
![image-20260903-093442.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_127cb9210daf1566c822d1d5c9c20ea26791ba2d234b278364d3e2316a4f504c/image-20260903-093442.png?cb=932c6bc38fed5a23eb5cd8b1c2b949c6)

## How to set your PPC policy

* If you exclude the **SEA (PPC)** channel type, **Keyword Policy** automatically changes to **Closed** and cannot be edited.

* When PPC is closed, publishers will see: **"PPC activity is not permitted on this program"**.

* If you include **SEA (PPC)** , **Keyword Policy** defaults to **Open** . You can change it to **Restricted** if you allow PPC only under specific conditions.

* For **Open** or **Restricted** policies, enter and save keyword restriction details that reflect your program rules.

[PPC_Keyword.mp4](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_609f18d1a18eb7420615711a682c9f160a376c69d9dc3254021203122953412e/PPC_Keyword.mp4.md?cb=8218ba7aa60e77587b8d1830f0d7aabf)

## [What is a PPC Policy?](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/what-is-a-ppc-policy.md)

**OPEN**

Publishers may bid on all brand keywords, misspellings, and related search terms without restriction.

**RESTRICTED**

Publishers may not bid on specified keywords, including brand names, misspellings, and restricted terms.

**CLOSED**

Publishers are prohibited from all PPC bidding and paid search activity for this program.

These updates give you more control over how publishers promote your program through paid search. Clear PPC permissions and keyword restrictions help protect your brand, reduce ambiguity, and make program rules easier for publishers to follow.

## Program Settings: Overview Tab Update

The **Overview** tab now gives you a clearer view of the program details that support sign-up and ongoing program management. These fields will be configured during program setup. Review these settings to make sure your program information is complete, accurate, and ready for affiliates to assess.

* **Terms and Conditions:** Add the plain-text terms affiliates must agree to when they apply to your program. Keep the wording clear and easy to follow.

* **Category:** Confirms the category assigned to your program during setup so affiliates can understand where your program fits.

* **Cancellation rate:** Shows the percentage of transactions that may be cancelled within a 30-day period.

* **Support level:** Shows the support level assigned to your program.

* **Currency:** Shows the currency used for your program transactions.

## Overview

### What is it?

The new dashboards for Webgains Agency Users are designed to provide an overview of all programs within the Agency Portfolio. This allows our Agency partners to easily check their managed program's health, key performance metrics, latest transaction counts, campaign membership requests, and more.
[Agency Dash.mp4](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_bb266c656a7875d1714400042768320c418c47d4e06142791439afe1fab627d5/Agency%2520Dash.mp4.md)

### Who can access it?

The new dashboard is currently available for Webgains Agency users, to support with management of their portfolios.

They replace the previous dashboard view for Agencies. Advertiser users will currently have no change.

## KPIs Explained

![image-20250725-094109.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_9ac61cc0a38846572256bf51b18e9a0eaf60c8b025018a8fd734ab978069d6da/image-20250725-094109.png?cb=d4f990c93fc16e346fba6a2b2aeca72c)

The KPIs sections shows the key performance data for your portfolio of programs

You can select the desired currency, and the timeframe you wish to view the performance over. The default will be set as the last 30 days.
![image-20250725-104058.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_b07b29ca908fcd59519dad6c7706d8e55771ad32ce603ea4949c4a513cf72694/image-20250725-104058.png?cb=dd1af99317b8467a20d8f8f12e39777e)

Total sales value and commission are calculated in the chosen currency, though the individual programs are shown in the currency in which they invoice.

The percentage change show the difference between the current period and the previous period.

For example, if the date range is set to **7 days**, then the previous period will be from 14 days ago to 7 days ago.

For **MTD (Month to-date)** this will be the total for the current calendar month versus the previous calendar month.

**YTD (Year-to-date)** will show the total for the current year up to today versus the same period last year.

The data in the report is refreshed every hour.

## **Publisher requests**

From the dashboard, you can accept and reject Publisher requests across multiple programs simultaneously.
![image-20250806-083333.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_4cef7155d85632f74c7da16f8299bef093225c0438ac575182279163affc1f86/image-20250806-083333.png?cb=68fdefd24d6d0db4654eaf20124c99f4)

With the filters on Program name and Publisher site you can focus on specific Programs, bulk accept/reject requests from particular Publishers.

### Program and Portfolio Health

📈
Learn more: <https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/health-rank-explained>

Every program has a health score, which is calculated based on a number of different metrics

**Portfolio Health** is the average health of all programs in your portfolio, and displays a 'Health Score' based on a number of key performance indicators.

The rankings are defined as follows:

* **New** - The program is less than 90 days old.

* **Great**- The program has no issues that affect its performance.

* **Good**- The program has minor issues that stop it from being a top performer.

* **Fair**- The program has a number of issues that need to be addressed.

* **Poor**- The program is a low performer and requires action.

* **Bad** - The program is receiving very low transactions, and may have a tracking issue.

The score is calculated based on a number of factors, including days since last transaction, campaign memberships growth \& activity, pending transaction enquiries, offers and vouchers uploaded to the program, tenancies, and monthly \& yearly transaction comparisons.

## Programs Overview Table

# How do I approve or reject my publisher applications?

If your program is on 'Manual Approval' for publisher applications (meaning you will need to approve applications manually before the publisher can join your program), when a publisher has requested to join your program they will appear in the '**Pending**' list within your Publisher Management page.

You can **Filter** the results if desired, either searching the publisher name or URL, or filter by their category or channel type.

Publishers can be Accepted or Rejected from your program either individually by selecting Approve/Reject on that publisher row, or in bulk by using the tickboxes to select the publishers you wish to process.
![image-20241007-132657.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_69a45c81b96441f3283d62580802abd6e9bfeb52b03cf125211d97394df55190/image-20241007-132657.png?cb=a421fe9e1e2a22c37a45adc187518857)

If you decide to Reject a publisher application, a popup box will appear for you to select the reason for rejection. The publisher can then be made aware the reason they were not right for your program.

# How do I batch upload transactions onto my program?

If you ever need to upload transactions to your program in bulk, you can do so by generating a CSV file of the transactions and following the below steps.

1. Within your advertiser platform, navigate to 'Add New Transactions' \> '**Multiple Transactions**'.

2. On this page, you will find guidance for providing a CSV format containing the transaction details that you wish to upload on your program.[**Download CSV File Template.**](https://platform.webgains.io/assets/template-csvs/new-transactions-template.csv)

   ![image-20241007-153638.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_8924f0cfb7ca0ebe03debde7ae4eb69691de9f13ac48811ce24a582331dacfbe/image-20241007-153638.png?cb=42e68406a845c0ff167b0ca6fd18bf17)
   1. **Action**: Compulsory field. Please enter 'New' for each transaction you'd like to upload.

   2. **DateTime**: Compulsory field. Enter the date and time of each transaction in 24 hour time, in format: DD/MM/YYYY HH:MM:SS or YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM:SS.

   3. **CampaignID**: Compulsory field. To ensure each transaction is awarded to the correct publisher, enter their unique campaign ID.

   4. **EventID**: Optional field. You can choose the commission structure for each transaction by entering the Event ID. If left blank, your default commission will be used.

   5. **OrderReference**: Compulsory field. Enter your unique order reference number for each transaction.

   6. **Value**: Compulsory field. Enter the sales total for each transaction using a decimal point (.) as the separator. The commission and override will calculate automatically once processed. Please note, do not include the currency symbol when inputting these values as it will cause the file to receive an error.

   7. **Comment**: Optional field. You can include a comment for each transaction. This will be visible to the publisher and visible within your reports.

   8. **ProgramID**: Compulsory field. Enter the program ID of each program you are uploading transactions to. You can upload transactions to multiple programs within one file.

3. Upload your file into the Drag \& Drop field in the platform, and you can then Upload for processing.

4. If there are any errors found in the file, they will be listed on the page or you can download a full Error Log. For example, if the order reference already exists on the program, or if there are any formatting errors in the file.

   ![image-20241007-154449.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_0cd3f3420468f03260471d17885d774239ef418de1c6643819351dd09927a5a4/image-20241007-154449.png?cb=93ab761f1f30ad6a603b1249f5768a23)

# Browser Extensions

Publisher **Browser Extensions**, also often referred to as 'toolbars', are closed user group cashback and voucher solutions.
![image-20240814-095349.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_0d35328dae0eeb56b6631daa230681b77d496e32c11335476856d9cdc3df52f2/image-20240814-095349.png?cb=5a104ed0242bc54e77265b28b4afb55d)

Users who pre-install a browser extension automatically get a pop-up message when they shop, notifying them of possible cashback or a voucher code. This solution means that customers feel rewarded when they shop, and Advertisers can benefit from keeping users on their site to view content and avoid the risk of losing sales to a competitor.

In addition to being featured within the Browser Extension platform, these Publishers often offer other types of exposure, such as newsletters, website placements, and solus emails.

The best way to engage with Browser Extension publishers is via offering their minimum required cashback, exclusive vouchers or investing in tenancy for extra exposure.

# How do I send Newsletters and share Offers with publishers?

In order to save time and resources on mass communication with your publishers when it comes to sharing the offers, opportunities, and other relevant updates, the Webgains "**Email My Publishers**" tool can help you bulk communicate with your publishers.

This can be used to share information about your latest promotional resources, assets and opportunities, program commission changes, product launches, and any other relevant updates that should be shared with your publishers.

**See more on:** [https://webgains.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/IH1/pages/3561717787/How+to+Write+a+Good+Newsletter?atlOrigin=eyJpIjoiNmM3NDAzYmQ0NTk1NDhmOWIwMmU2ZmE5ZDAyMzliZTEiLCJwIjoiYyJ9](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/how-to-write-a-good-newsletter-to-publishers.md)

* Individual/Selected Publishers

* A test copy to send to yourself, so you can check how it looks before it's sent to your publishers

# Buy Now Pay Later

Mostly known for being a payment solution, these publisher types give brands access to key shopping communities through multiple touch points.

They can increase impression share and sales by having brands included in product searches, through in-app content, sponsored placements on the app homepage, being included as a 'Featured store' and through Rewards.
![image-20240814-095623.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_83bb82fd5266915ea3c5966df06e026ff923902019174b88e100ec1fe1309dd8/image-20240814-095623.png?cb=d54fe29c4f9a8235c0cbc5d1b5319d1c)

Advertisers are also able to work on the affiliate solution element alone and this partnership does not require or need the payment integration on the advertiser site in order to work with them.

These publishers will work with almost all vertical types, but Fashion, Homewares, and Beauty tend to perform best.

![image-20240814-095633.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_d0ce7aac44988ef7f50cde3269a90f0d31ba02f9da087f7d4ba9209f09eec07f/image-20240814-095633.png?cb=816317801b2a40cdfe272a5ffe4e1c43)

# Can I set up a Webhook/Postback URL?

Webhook scripts are a way of getting real-time information about new transactions and updates to existing transactions. Every time transactions are generated or updated, we will send a message to a URL of your choice, containing the information you choose.

This can be set-up and managed within your publisher account under Tools \> Webhooks.

You will first need to enter a **Destination URL**. The details you've specified using the fields available of any new or updated transactions are sent to this URL. For GET requests, we only support URLs where the query string is preceded by '?' and the query string parameters are separated by ampersands.

Then, you can select the HTTP request method, along with the fields you wish to send.

Should you need to rename any fields, you can select "Use Custom Fields" and the field text will become editable.
![image-20240812-142132.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_5453091b3670d77deb1e3a78429a976da73b1ee01be6980471ff29f038765b9e/image-20240812-142132.png?cb=c00eab99daade8ee2c1a81357f9d3b44)

To find out more information about any field, simply hover over the corresponding tooltip to view the data it will send.

Once you have added a URL and selected the fields to send, an Example will display at the bottom of the page. If you are happy with the Webhook configuration, click "Create Webhook" and the changes will take effect.

# Can Webgains offer an App tracking solution?

Yes, Webgains are able to offer an app tracking solution via server to server tracking.

Server-to-Server (S2S) tracking is a robust method for managing attribution and recording transactions. It involves using a server callback initiated by the advertiser and directed to a designated API endpoint provided by Webgains.

During the integration process onto the Webgains network, if you are requiring app tracking our integration team will share guidance outlining how to integrate S2S App tracking by capturing the `click_id` from the URL and sending conversion data via a Postback URL.

When implementing app tracking on platforms like AppsFlyer, Adjust, or other custom solutions, it's crucial to provide an attribution link that accurately tracks user interactions and conversions. The attribution link typically includes parameters that capture key data points, such as the source, campaign, and click ID, allowing the tracking platform to attribute app installs, in-app events, or other conversions to specific marketing efforts.

For more information on this, please get in touch with your Webgains contact, or reach out to [support@webgains.com](mailto:support@webgains.com).

# Card Linking Offers

Card Linking Offers are publisher types that require shoppers to link their bank card to their account in order to claim back rewards on purchases.

Often, the individual will need to download the publisher's app (in the case of Airtime Rewards) and set up their account with the relevant bank details before they can shop and claim any cashback to use on other purchases or redeem as currency. This publisher opportunity also ties online and offline together, by allowing for rewards to be used at brands with digital and physical touchpoints (i.e. in store)
![image-20240814-095719.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_c83524cb2b678f7bf60369b0094c1c3379a8be8b5d113e65c6f6f2ae77d3f61f/image-20240814-095719.png?cb=bd624d09d7676ad00c87cdadb28b3b6b)

They promote advertisers through their homepage, push notifications and banners within the app, so they can ensure they have premium placements in front of the publisher's audience.

Most have no upfront costs and operate with a CPA model.

# Cashback Sites

Cashback, reward, or loyalty sites, such as **Quidco** and **TopCashback**, are websites that offer people incentives by rewarding the customers for the purchase through refunding them part of their cash back. The rewards will vary from site to site, but typically include collecting points, cash-back, or even making charitable donations.

They use the commission awarded to them by an Advertiser and share a portion of this commission with their users in the form of cash, redeemable points or gift cards.

Cashback Publishers tend to be very profitable in terms of ROI and can drive high conversion rates, as they reach audiences that are highly engaged and are actively looking for the best deals. The main force behind a loyalty or reward site or program incentivises customers to return and make repeat purchases.

The best way to engage with Cashback sites is to offer an exclusive deal, increase CPA or take out tenancy to increase the exposure to optimise within their platform.

## Points to Consider:

* **The incentive** for customers to make a purchase

* **Increased AOV** -- especially for retail

* **Repeated purchases = customer retention** (especially important in the age of savvy price-conscious consumers that are prone to switching). Customers may be loyal to the cashback site, rather than the brand, but as a result, they keep buying from the brand. Repeat purchases can also be driven by offering a higher cashback percentage on a second purchase, within a timeframe (increased order frequency)

* High conversion rate -- customers are likely to have carried out their research before going to a cashback site

* **The lifetime value** of net profit

# Cashback & Reward Sites Consent Management

**Disclaimer**: It is the advertiser's sole responsibility as the data controller, to establish and enforce consent rules on their services. This guide provides information to help you make informed decisions but does not constitute legal advice. Please always seek formal legal advice on your specific setup.

**Consent management** refers to informing users about tracking, obtaining their explicit **consent**, and honouring their choices. In affiliate marketing, tracking data is essential for measuring campaign performance and attributing results. However, tracking activities must align with privacy laws, requiring transparency and user consent unless exemptions apply.

## Guidelines for Loyalty and Reward Publishers

In Autumn 2024, the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) clarified cookie consent requirements under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) for tracking transactions in **cashback** , **loyalty** publishers, and other **reward** -**based** business models. The ICO confirmed that cookies used to track purchases and deliver rewards are "**strictly necessary**," as they enable the service consumers sign up for.

### ICO Ruling Details

* The ICO established that cookies for reward services, such as cashback or loyalty programs, are deemed "**strictly necessary**" under PECR. This classification applies because such cookies are essential for delivering a service explicitly requested by the user.

* These cookies are **exempt**from consent requirements if their use is strictly limited to delivering the requested service.

* If cookies are used for *secondary*purposes beyond the essential service, the exemption no longer applies.

* See [Can the use of cookies for providing a reward service qualify the cookies as 'strictly necessary', exempting them from the consent requirement under PECR?](https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/advice-and-services/innovation-advice/previously-asked-questions/#pecr)

*The ICO ruling applies explicitly to the UK market. Compliance with campaigns in non-UK markets depends on local regulations and legal guidance should always be taken. Advertisers should consider adopting flexible tracking solutions, like* ***Webgains' resilient tracking*** *, which aligns with diverse legal requirements across regions. Get in touch with us to find out more.*

## Practical Implications for Advertisers

* **Tracking Setup**: Advertisers must ensure tracking systems align with ICO's guidance. Review existing setups to confirm compliance, and implement tracking systems that strictly align with "necessary" cookie use. See below for implementing Exceptions with Webgains.

* **Internal Communication**: Inform your legal and tech teams about this information and make adjustments to your CMP if necessary.

* **Publisher Collaboration**: Work with publishers to confirm alignment of their tracking requirements.

By adhering to these practices, advertisers and publishers can maintain compliance while maximising the efficiency of their affiliate marketing campaigns.

## How to Implement Cookie/Consent Rules for Cashback or Loyalty Only

Webgains enables advertisers to manage cookie consent requirements for cashback and loyalty activity by using unique campaign or publisher identifiers embedded in tracking links.

Advertisers can use the specific campaign ID included in landing page URLs, to manage consent levels and consent exceptions. By default, Webgains provides the campaign ID as part of the landing page URL using the parameter "`cname`". N.B.: If the `siteid`is already included as a click-through parameter on your account we will not show `cname` you must use this instead to identify the unique campaign.

See <https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/webgains-dynamic-clickthrough-parameters> for more info.

For example, to manage the consent level for a specific campaign such as **TopCashback UK** see below.

### Identifying TopCashback Traffic

To ensure that cookies used for TopCashback are classified as strictly necessary, the URL parameter `&cname=4491` should be monitored in the landing page URLs. This parameter signifies a link associated with TopCashback was clicked and allows the cookie to be created under the strictly necessary guidelines listed above.

## Publisher Considerations

* Publishers do not typically need to alter their links or accounts, provided the tracking technology complies with the ICO's ruling.

* Cashback and loyalty publishers will be reviewed to ensure compliance with the "strictly necessary" cookie logic.

# What are Clickthrough Parameters and how do I set them in Webgains?

Clickthrough parameters are values that we will add to the destination URL of every click that we send through to an advertiser's system. These are typically used by advertisers within their analytics reporting to help identify that the user has been referred by a Webgains affiliate. The parameters added to the program set up entirely depends on what data the advertiser would like to track within their analytics.

## How do we set them up?

![image-20240628-140511.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_7d7d41c0c0f5c0a67739239d5630e035a62233228831dc0318a2298cd53a4b13/image-20240628-140511.png?cb=3250045f5945a484d498acc52d940af5)
Located within Program Settings

These should be in pairs, with the 'name' of the parameter, followed by the value (data) required. For example: **source=webgains****\&** **siteid=\^\^\^siteid\^\^\^**

Each pair is separated by the **\&** symbol.

For example, if the target (landing page) URL for a program is https://www.mysite.com , and the clickthrough parameter set up is **source=webgains**, when the user clicks on an affiliate link, they will be redirected via Webgains tracking to https://www.mysite.com?**source=webgains**
**Note:** There is **no need** to add a **?** character at the beginning of the clickthrough parameters. The system will add this as necessary. If the**?** character is included within the clickthrough parameters this will produce an error and they will not be saved to the platform.

The maximum length for clickthrough parameters is 255 characters, including spaces.

### Dynamic Parameters

Dynamic parameters just means that they are not static (fixed), so essentially they will *dynamically* populate with the required data. For example, our dynamic parameter **\^\^\^affiliateid\^\^\^** will automatically populate with the affiliate ID that generated the click referral. E.g. if the clickthrough parameter was set up like affiliate=**\^\^\^affiliateid\^\^\^**, the destination URL will be like [https://www.mysite.com](https://www.mysite.com/)?affiliate=**12345**

**The following dynamic parameters are available:**

* \^\^\^siteid\^\^\^ (populates the site/campaign id)

* \^\^\^campaignname\^\^\^ (populates the site/campaign name)

* \^\^\^affiliateid\^\^\^

* \^\^\^affiliatename\^\^\^

* \^\^\^linkid\^\^\^ (populates id of the banner)

* \^\^\^cid\^\^\^ (click id)

* \^\^\^referer\^\^\^

* \^\^\^date\^\^\^ (format: YYYYMMDD)

* \^\^\^datetime\^\^\^ (format: YYYYMMDDHHMMSS)

* \^\^\^timestamp\^\^\^ (format: Unix timestamp)

* \^\^\^linkname\^\^\^

* \^\^\^channeltype\^\^\^

* \^\^\^publishergroups\^\^\^

The default clickthrough parameters we set for a program are: **source=webgains\&siteid=\^\^\^siteid\^\^\^**

## Google Analytics and UTM Parameters:

UTM parameters are a variant of URL parameters used by marketers to track the effectiveness of online marketing campaigns across traffic sources and publishing media using software such as Google Analytics.

Google Analytics (GA) learns about how users engage with a link, if a UTM parameter is present. So, when the link is clicked on, the UTM 'tags' send information to GA about where the user came from, along with some other key data.

More information can be found here: <https://support.google.com/analytics/answer/10917952?hl=en#zippy=%2Cin-this-article>

**There are 5 different UTM parameters, which may be used in any order:**

* **utm_** **source****:** Identify the advertiser, site, publication, etc. that is sending traffic to your property, for example: Webgains, Google, Facebook

* **utm_** **medium****:** The advertising or marketing medium where the link was shared, for example: cpc, banner, email newsletter, social

* **utm_** **campaign****:** The individual campaign name (or slogan, promo code, etc)

* **utm_** **term****:** Identify any keywords for the campaign. If you're manually tagging paid keyword campaigns, you should also use utm_term to specify the keyword

* **utm_** **content****:** Used to differentiate similar content, or links within the same ad. For example, if you have 2 CTA links within the same email message, you can use utm_content and set different values for each so you can tell which version is more effective.

To build the clickthrough parameter using UTMs, individual parameters are written as the UTM code, an equals sign, and then your identifying text.

* **Example:** **utm_source****=** **webgains**

Each UTM parameter should be separated by an ampersand (\&)

* **Example:** **utm_source****=** **webgains****\&** **utm_medium****=** **affiliate**

Also, it's important to keep in mind that the UTM parameters never use spaces, are case sensitive, and each parameter begins with a question mark (but as mentioned earlier in the doc - our system will add this on automatically for the clickthrough parameters).

### ++**Example of a Webgains affiliate link that contains UTM Parameters:**++

**Clickthrough URL:** [https://www.webgains.com](https://www.webgains.com/public/en/)

**Clickthrough Parameters:** utm_source=webgains\&utm_medium=affiliate\&utm_campaign=\^\^\^affiliateid\^\^\^

**Tracking Link:** [https://track.webgains.com/click.html?wgcampaignid=111\&wgprogramid=222](https://track.webgains.com/click.html?wgcampaignid=111&wgprogramid=222)

*302 Link Redirects (redirecting the user through our tracking to the website/destination URL)*

**Destination URL:** https://www.webgains.com/?wgu=222_111_15914659014636_78a3160e38\&wgexpiry=1599241901\&**utm_source=webgains\&utm_medium=affiliate\&utm_campaign=12345**

Webgains links with this setup will generate sales (last click dependent) with the **Source****/** **Medium** column within their GA's ecommerce section as: **webgains****/** **affiliate**

**Top Tips;**

It's key to remember when adding any custom clickthrough parameters that your users can see them. Once the link redirect has happened, the clickthrough parameters will show on the destination URL (like with the example above). So, don't use anything you wouldn't want your readers or competitors to see!

UTMs give you an opportunity to collect granular data that you can't find without tags on individual links. But the data aren't always perfect. Users can copy links and share them on other platforms, which can alter the data and provide incorrect metrics. As you assess and review your final campaign metrics, allow some room for error.

# Closed User Groups and Rewards

Closed Group, Loyalty or Reward Platform Publishers target the audiences outside of the public domain and ensures that offers are only accessible to their members. The offers are often given in the form of cashback, vouchers or discounted gift cards.

The users of these Publishers are highly-engaged, occasionally with higher disposable incomes, and they can often target promotional activity to specific user segments and provide forecasts for upcoming campaigns.
![image-20240814-100004.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_b6e753682aeea1e50ea4d7c62f339496e8452771434d9f9482dea6e0649fd35d/image-20240814-100004.png?cb=7e61cb48a679f3b898ffe4846be9f1fc)

Common types of closed-group publishers include Employee Benefit Platforms (Reward Gateway, Blue Light Card, Lifeworks), Student Platforms (Student Beans, Totum, Youth Discount), Bank Rewards (Revolut, Cardlytics).

For example, many businesses offer their employees added benefits on top of their salary. Often these benefits are stored in a rewards platform, housed on the company's intranet. This is where employees can access exclusive deals or get cashback on purchases.

Some of the Publishers within this category will have integration and/or monthly fees and will require tenancy budget and exclusive offers/discounts.

## Points to Consider:

* **High conversion rates**-- an incentive for the specific closed-user group to make a purchase as a reward

* **Provide exclusive offers** to closed user group

* **Higher AOV** and repeat sales

* **Loyal base**due to the targeted group

# Commission Management

Within this section you can find various resources about how to set up commission schemes in the advertiser platform, including the creation and management of Smart Commissions and what options the tool offers for creating commission schemes within the Webgains platform.

Webgains has designed our Smart Commissions tool to ensure the creation and management of commissions can be done as simply and swiftly as possible, all in one place, without the need for additional lengthy tracking implementations.

During integration onto the Webgains network, the tracking script will include Items tracking, Voucher tracking, and Customer Type tracking, which then enables Smart Commission features. Additionally, the Smart Commissions tool will use data provided in Product Feeds to enable product grouping based commission schemes.

For any additional support in creating and managing commissions that is not covered in this area, please contact your Webgains account manager, or [support@webgains.com](mailto:support@webgains.com).

# What are the different Commission Statuses for Transactions?

Tracked transactions will have different **Statuses** depending on when they were created and if they have been approved and paid by the advertiser yet.

| **Status ID** | **Status Name** | **Description** |

# Commission Tiers within Smart Commissions

**Commission** **Tiers**let you vary rates and reward publishers based on monthly performance or transaction basket value.

Adding tiers makes your program more attractive, giving publishers goals to earn extra commission or bonuses. Incentive thresholds should be achievable and worthwhile.

Within the Smart Commissions tool, you can create multiple custom Tiers, selecting the tier criteria and the commission awarded, with multiple tier levels if desired. Then, when creating your new Commission scheme, you can quickly and easily select your pre-made Tier to use.
![image-20251218-172447.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_e7860037bb88e496beaf5346a6315983fab69b6bb8c8c644a5daef2e489d9dab/image-20251218-172447.png?cb=ff76fbd745270d48f681742c3f9a7902)

You can create Tiers either within the commission rule creation directly, or within the 'Manage tiers' page.

## Monthly Performance Commission Tiers

Monthly commission tiers allow you to vary the commission based on the number of **transactions** , **revenue** or **commission** achieved within a**calendar month**.

When creating the tier, select which criteria it should be based on:
![image-20251218-172521.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_b101185089acae982ae5f760505afb90da68855cfc26b8ba35b6486d7a3254df/image-20251218-172521.png?cb=2bdeb91be2e20cbf0ad3a1db8718772e)

Each tier has multiple and a minimum threshold value that signals when transactions are awarded commission at different rates.

For example, using a monthly transaction tier, if you wanted to award 2% commission for the first 100 transactions in the month and 3% for all transactions after this. You could create a set of tiers like this:
![23223f6b-3f7c-4ae9-91f3-1932acb27747.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_4ab6e2043e99542c6f92a42d60d9be7374c1e1b3629184b7747d41fb12d6bdfa/23223f6b-3f7c-4ae9-91f3-1932acb27747.png?cb=37fec470323df13956b692b6fa27692b)

As well as varying commission, you could also choose to pay a **one-off** **bonus**when a publisher reaches a certain number of transactions.
The values for these monthly commissions are **reset**at the beginning of each month.

These values/targets are calculated for each individual publisher. I.e. each publisher on the rule must individually meet the tier threshold before they receive the bonus/reach the higher Level.

## Basket Value Tiering

Basket value tiers are based on the **value** of individual **transactions**. For example, if you wanted to commission at different rates for transactions above the value £50, and then again above the value of £100. You could set up a set of tiers like this:
![image-20260113-144629.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_617933659d8a52967656a5299d95aa01e250a3c87e748e57f30547e555703e7a/image-20260113-144629.png?cb=0aefbe7cdae675dd9e7a5b33a40ba40a)

and then easily drop the tier into your commission rule.
![image-20260113-144645.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_9f6150013d137002581f1176d53e726087f4adc5d7b5b32cacb02b87bce9d3bb/image-20260113-144645.png?cb=3bae6c48ea30222b75926c0cf5b08253)

## Manage Tiers

Create, manage, and edit all of your program Tiers within the 'Manage tiers' page.
![image-20260113-145041.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_aedc7a924b1046884bd8837fbc268d3fa0609f058511d9dd370d70e50851ac1e/image-20260113-145041.png?cb=c129563042a2ba2c4f5e0226d4b4fe4f)

This way, you can organise and manage your various tiers efficiently, so they are then ready to be quickly dropped into your commission rule as needed.

# Comparison Shopping Services (CSS)

Comparison Shopping Services (CSS) enable Advertisers to promote on Google Shopping Ads. They collect product information and offers from the Advertisers via product feeds, and they can bid for Shopping ad placements on behalf of the Advertiser.
![image-20240814-101007.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_c391365cf9c673bcff319eff64e2d2de3b6829da11ee3b6385d7399e9c40ed8f/image-20240814-101007.png?cb=c1060e39f4ad0a319e98ddb6c60e889f)

The Advertiser with the winning bid will have to then pay CPC. For instance, if your CSS bids 30p, and the next advertiser bid is 20p, you will have to pay 20p if your advert is clicked.

We work with several CSS providers that work on CPA, which is completely risk-free, and the Advertiser will only need to pay out the commission for the products that were sold via CSS provider.

The best way to engage with CSS Publishers is to work on increased CPA, which will enable the CSS partner to send more traffic and as a result generate more revenue.

## Points to Consider:

* **Drive traffic** to the advertiser's site through ads, keywords and product feeds

# Planning Your Commission Structure

Depending on your program service level, the process of planning your commission structure may vary, but there are certain recommendations and considerations to factor in when planning your program commission structure.

## **For Supported Programs:**

During your onboarding onto Webgains, your account manager will help advise on a commission structure to put in place, depending on your goals, business model and competitor activity.

### **For Self-Managed Programs:**

Our advertisers are entitled to define their commission structure for the publishers depending on their experience and after learning the general commission structures of their competitors.

#### What to consider:

When deciding on what commission to offer to your publishers, you should try to make sure the commission rates are **competitive**and in line with both your margins and the prices offered by your competitors. If you don't offer appropriate commission rates, your program may not be as attractive against other similar retailers.

It's also important to consider that publishers may be more attracted to programs that have longer [cookie periods](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/tracking-and-cookies-in-affiliate-marketing.md) and those that offer rewards for all customers.

It is useful to allow for commission increases in return for extra promotion during specific times like sales or new product launches. Webgains **Smart Commissions**feature allows commission payout to be set on Publisher, Product, or Customer Type.
For more information on setting up Smart Commissioning, view: [Webgains Smart Commissions](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/smart-commissions.md) [.](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/smart-commissions.md)

# Publisher Compliance and Regulation

Compliance is an integral element of the network as it ensures all publisher programs meet specific guidelines and are suitable to promote our advertisers.

Regulating the publishers we have on the network protects Webgains integrity and the quality of the relationship between all parties (us, publishers, advertisers).

## What is compliance and why is it important?

The compliance team within Webgains identify suspicious publishers who may be promoting advertisers and driving sales via unauthorised marketing methods.

Fraudulent activity committed by publishers damages the reputation of both the advertiser and affiliate network. Compliance teams ensure advertisers and publishers operate in an appropriate manner by detecting questionable practises such as cookie stuffing, PPC Fraud, unauthorised media buying. This type of activity can harm brand image and have financial implications. Webgains compliance team protect advertisers from paying out commission to publishers who have obtained sales illegitimately.

### Cookie Stuffing

Cookie stuffing is a method used by fraudulent affiliates to "trick" websites into thinking they have sent them traffic when they have not.

Also known as cookie dropping, publishers who practice this method are attempting to gain commissions for referring audiences even when they did not do so by*'stuffing'* more than one affiliate cookie into a user's browser without their consent. This means that when a conversion is validated, the third party (publisher) will receive a cut when the advertiser pays out commission.

### PPC Fraud

This is fraud conducted through pay-per-click (PPC) online advertising.

This occurs when a person, automated script, or computer program imitates a legitimate user of a web browser, clicking on an ad without having a real interest in the target of the ad's link. This could cause an advertiser to have their entire daily budget for PPC used quickly, which impacts their margins, forecasting, and budgets, and opens the marketplace for their competition to perform better.

### Brand Bidding

Brand bidding is the practice of bidding on branded terms or branded keywords of a third party, in most cases a competitor. This way, advertiser's ads appear when that brand name is entered as a search term and the goal is to direct traffic away from the competitor's site.

Our Compliance team utilise third party solutions to help monitor keywords on search engines to ensure unauthorised brand terms are not being bid, and help combat against any PPC violations. This is done by automating the search of multiple keywords throughout the day from different locations and devices discovers which affiliates are advertising on your branded keywords. Once removed, clients benefit from increased traffic and reduced costs by not having to pay unnecessary affiliate commissions and by reducing branded CPCs (Cost Per Click).

### Media Buying

Media buying is a key aspect of affiliate marketing that involves purchasing ad space to promote a product or service. It can be a vital strategy for increasing affiliate sales but advertisers and networks need to know where the advertiser has been promoted in order to agree that sales were driven legitimately and via authorised sites.

A variety of media buying companies will promotes brands across apps, websites, and social platforms, but it is not always entirely transparent which of these has been interacted with to reach the brand site. Some of the sites on which they buy ad space is indecent (gambling, pornography) and unregulated (chat rooms, forums). If traffic and sales are found to be from sites of this nature, it may breach the network T\&Cs that the publisher agreed to and advertisers can refuse to pay commissions on these sales as they were obtained through unauthorised means.

# How does Consent Management affect my Affiliate Program?

**Disclaimer**: It is the advertiser's sole responsibility as the data controller, to establish and enforce consent rules on their services. This guide provides information to help you make informed decisions but does not constitute legal advice. Please always seek formal legal advice on your specific setup.

## Managing Consent in Affiliate Marketing

In affiliate marketing, managing consent is not just a legal necessity but a best practice that balances effective campaign tracking with user privacy. This guide delves into consent management principles, highlights how Webgains facilitates compliance, explains server-to-server tracking, and clarifies UK-specific guidelines for loyalty and reward publishers.

## What Is Consent Management in Affiliate Marketing?

Consent management refers to informing users about tracking, obtaining their explicit consent, and honouring their choices. In affiliate marketing, tracking data is essential for measuring campaign performance and attributing results. However, tracking activities must align with privacy laws, requiring transparency and user consent unless exemptions apply.

## How Webgains Supports Consent Management

Webgains provides tools and best practices to ensure compliance with privacy laws while optimizing tracking for affiliates. Here's how we help:

### Compatibility with Major CMPs

Webgains integrates with all leading Consent Management Platforms (CMPs), ensuring seamless tracking within your chosen CMP to manage and document user consent effectively.

### Shopify Integration

Our Shopify Plugin is configured to work with the Shopify Privacy API, simplifying consent management while maintaining operational efficiency.

### IAB Membership and TCF 2.2 Compliance

As a member of the Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB), Webgains adheres to the Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF) 2.2, providing a standardized approach to consent management that meets industry and legal standards.
For additional information on this, please view: [The Tracking and Consent Framework (TCF) 2.2 Guidance](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/the-tracking-and-consent-framework-tcf-2-2-guidanc.md)

## Webgains Cookies: Purpose and Categorization

Webgains uses attribution cookies to track actions (e.g., sales or leads) associated with affiliates. These cookies are typically classified as performance or analytics cookies, as they focus on campaign measurement rather than collecting sensitive personal data.

Advertisers retain the authority to classify these cookies based on their specific tracking activities and compliance requirements. Regular reviews ensure accurate categorization and adherence to legal guidelines.

## Consent and Server-to-Server Tracking

Webgains offers server-to-server tracking as an alternative to client-side cookies, providing additional flexibility in data collection:

### How It Works

Instead of placing cookies directly on a user's device, server-to-server tracking processes data on the server side. This method appeals to advertisers seeking alternatives to browser-based cookies.

### Consent Implications

Even with server-to-server tracking, if identifiable information (e.g., unique IDs) is processed, consent is still required under GDPR and similar laws.

## Specific Guidelines for Loyalty and Reward Publishers (UK)

In Autumn 2024, the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) clarified cookie consent requirements under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) for tracking transactions in cashback, loyalty publishers, and other reward-based business models. The ICO confirmed that cookies used to track purchases and deliver rewards are "strictly necessary," as they enable the service consumers sign up for.
Read more on [Cashback \& Reward Sites Consent Management](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/cashback-sites-consent-management.md)

## Best Practices for Consent Management

* **Transparency**: Clearly communicate what cookies you use, their purposes, and users' options. This fosters trust and encourages opt-in behaviour.

* **CMP Integration**: Select a CMP that integrates seamlessly with affiliate tracking systems for streamlined consent management.

* **Adherence to Standards**: Align with frameworks like TCF 2.2 for robust and transparent consent practices.

* **Regular Reviews**: Periodically evaluate cookie classifications and compliance measures to stay updated with evolving regulations.

# Content Sites

Content Publishers produce content that addresses a specific audience and demographic, which can include websites, blogs forums, and portals. Normally, the content is tailored and targeted to the readers with the same interests. Hence, the Publishers tend to only promote brands and products that would resonate and prompt purchases with their readers.
![image-20240814-101215.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_1fd87d49cd7c9ac3d25066a57e5357652a8e517cab20f8bb6d5ede40b3697795/image-20240814-101215.png?cb=8ceac85e1612b90cafb9500ccadb084a)

Due to the nature of this Publisher type and its clearly defined audiences, Content Sites are great for targeting specific consumers that are at the very beginning stage of their purchasing journey. By informing the audience about brands or products, they can act as a powerful tool for driving sales, but they usually require a high CPA increase or tenancy budget. When it comes to smaller, specialist sites, the conversion rate (the number of people that go from the site to make a purchase) is often higher -- assuming the advertiser is a good fit for the publisher.
![image-20240814-101230.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_8f7d967dadabcdcd46e2319b271ed99c43ede2b45e7d989b3010e9030d6b14ec/image-20240814-101230.png?cb=7494efdfdfe31eccb4e9b0d2093bd0a0)

# Conversion Optimization Tools (On-site Publishers)

On-site conversion optimization publishes require a low level of integration (handled by the Publisher) to work on the Advertiser's website.

There are various types of on-site publishers; from overlays, to pop-ups, to live-chats, and more. Often powered by Artificial Intelligence (AI), they monitor user behaviour on-site and then give relevant product suggestions, stock level information, and offers, in a bid to push conversions over the line.
![image-20240814-110203.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_31ba4c284608bb5b3d66e197c8c54fd5f6e65c05a9381c7d521e2b482abfb5ff/image-20240814-110203.png?cb=7aba51a95afe2204a555c3697e148071)

Some of the benefits of working with these on-site tools include minimising basket abandonment, increasing Average Order Value (AOV), cross-selling, upselling, as well as improving customer shopping experience overall.

**Some of these publishers can be Activated via** **The Tag****!**

Activating publishers via The Webgains Tag means that no additional code needs adding to your site in order to work with these publishers; it can all be enabled through your existing Webgains script once you integrate with us as an Advertiser.

# Conversion Optimization Tools (Retargeting & Remarketing)

Retargeting and Remarketing tools are common conversion optimization methods, and they share a common goal to increase conversions from people who are most likely to purchase from the advertiser. However, they key difference is the strategy.

Retargeting is a way to reach people who have previously interacted with Advertiser's website or mobile application. The Publishers who run remarketing campaigns can help to strategically position Advertiser's ads to target these audiences while they browse online, enabling to increase brand's awareness or encourage those audiences to make a purchase.
![image-20240814-110318.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_4fd1de356edb2d48e4e7cf69089e0dea502cc18b16c08c0822c1b91eed68d372/image-20240814-110318.png?cb=7cbb712f6e2bb9f169ceb2cdb2fa5d82)

On the other hand, Remarketing is typically based on email; it works by collecting user data and creating contact lists, which are later utilised to send marketing emails.

Normally, the Advertisers will be asked to share their conversion rate, post-view data and creatives. However, some of the advantages of working with these partners include the ability to work on CPA with no risk to the Advertiser, as there are usually no up-front fees required.

**Some of these publishers can be Activated via** **The Tag****!**

Activating publishers via The Webgains Tag means that no additional code needs adding to your site in order to work with these publishers; it can all be enabled through your existing Webgains script once you integrate with us as an Advertiser.

# Creating a Smart Commission Rule

Smart Commissions enable you to create **flexible**commission rules based on the products you sell, customer segments and the publisher which has driven the sale.

Each commission rule requires you to outline the scheme name, along with the rate you want to offer. There are then additional rule conditions and options, enabling you to create flexible commission schemes for your program.

After clicking 'Create Commission', you will be prompted to select which type of commission you wish to create:
![image-20260115-113100.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_8d738b22cc483790792cb08fe5561abd82c61b5608b654a97f2632abc0c68919/image-20260115-113100.png?cb=aea3803002db88f1a5b7e1d7f3212273)

* **General Commission**: will create a commission rule that is applied to all of the publishers in your program

* **Group Commission** : creates a rule for publishers within a [Publisher Commission Group](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/creating-a-publisher-commission-group.md).

  * To edit your commission group, visit the 'Manage groups' page.

* **Publisher Commission:** enables you to select a single publisher to apply a rule to.

  * When adding the publisher you can see if it is 'Ungrouped', or already part of a Publisher Commission group. If it is already part of a group, then a condition will be added to the commission (Labelled 'Publishers in this Group'**)**which allows for this publisher to receive a different rate to other publishers in the group.

## Core Requirements

### Name

A title for the commission rule so that it can easily be identified in transactions and reporting.

### Description

Additional details to describe the set up of the commission. This should be something you can easily identify and reference.

### Commission Rate

#### Commission rate - Standard

If offering a **Standard** commission rate, enter the value for your commission, and then select the Commission type either as a **percentage** of the transaction value, a **fixed** value for each transaction, or a fixed value per **item**within each transaction.
![f4890f98-b694-4c6f-a680-44d26fcca0dd.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_1fb82e99d438b0b8c7f85efc002e8e209f81fc76555dc7da8779a91f66588cff/f4890f98-b694-4c6f-a680-44d26fcca0dd.png?cb=93334f4e8145d2bb764de3a67596f59c)

#### Commission rate - Tiered

In addition to Standard commission rates, you can further incentivise with **Commission Tiers** , which enable you to vary the commission rate based on monthly transactions, revenue or commissions or based or by basket value. For more on Commission tiers, [**view here**](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/commission-tiers.md)**.**

Select the tier you wish to offer as part of this scheme creation.
![image-20251212-114520.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_ba02315a37f7ddc3e0ae7019f6d33a552b7f1122cd0e7c18dbb92cf8d10c02a9/image-20251212-114520.png?cb=3f5d57387b66b28756c5abf940ff4e6b)

### Additional Options - Defining the Commission Type

![image-20260109-112451.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_9165707b6a97385fef55dc48441013e8ffe45d83cc54fcd663183b6be0990075/image-20260109-112451.png?cb=06b72eb011daf44deb9acd9edc01d013)

#### Set as Default

By checking this option, this commission rule becomes the **Default** rule for all publishers in the program. This is the rate that all publishers will receive if they **don't** match any other conditions.

This Default rate will also be used for any voucher transactions where there is not a set [Voucher Commission](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/voucher-code-commission.md) rate set up. The default rule cannot be created within a group and cannot have any conditions.

#### Set as Top Priority

By setting a rule as Top priority, it will be moved to top of the commission rule list and will be processed **before**all other rules.
![image-20260114-115746.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_6c4c459da16bc81296277198be84d444d4568fe7d1252b2e71e0500d906aa47e/image-20260114-115746.png?cb=d3acc85991573e47ed4fbc3abcb48185)

So, all tracked transactions will be checked against this 'Top Priority' rule first, but if none of the conditions match (e.g. if the rule specifies products that didn't appear in the transaction's tracked items), then the next rule will be checked, and so on down the Order list.
![order.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_cacf420ed30a4403292bcd2757fffa25b904720fb2eb4d59809c4c1bee5b2b31/order.png?cb=b5a4b66a4193bdc7ed788f38f5913afe)

You can **drag-and-drop** general commission rules to re-order the list. This will then determine the order that the rules are checked.

#### Enable Post-View Tracking

This option will enable commission to be attributed based on publisher views of your link (['post-view' tracking](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/what-is-post-view.md)). You can set the period after a view that transaction is eligible commission in the commission settings.

### Schedules

Using the date controls, you can set a commission to continue indefinitely, for a fixed scheduled period or create multiple schedules. Each schedule needs a start and end date and cannot overlap.

Outside of the periods defined in these schedules, this commission rule won't be applied and the next rule on the timeline will instead be applied.
The date and time for the Smart Commission setup will be determined based on the timezone of the **User** who configures the commission rule. This means that the commission's timing settings are aligned with the timezone settings of the individual user responsible for establishing the commission parameters.

## Conditions

Commission conditions enable you to specify particular criteria required for a publisher to receive the commission rate. Each commission rule can have multiple conditions, and all of the conditions will need to be met for the commission rate to be rewarded. You can only apply one condition of each type in a single commission rule.

### Customer type

![image-20251215-141140.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_06657713271be73a2d08329ce00b1abb5e413901fa795e2af68463c916382a83/image-20251215-141140.png?cb=51620c81d94a0010546e840bddda6e5f)

The customer type condition enables you to reward commission based on the customer type information received in the transaction. This will normally either be **EXISTING** , for customers who have previously made a purchase, or **NEW** for new customers. Alternatively, you can provide **CUSTOM** customer type information in your tracking to identify specific customer types.

This data must be sent within your [Webgains tracking script](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/webgains-default-tracking-guide.md). And, if you select Custom, the value you enter must match exactly what is tracked within the 'CustomerType' line in the tracked conversion.

For more info: [Creating Customer Type Commissions](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/customer-type-smart-commission.md)

### Products

Commission rules can be set up based on products in your transactions (provided product information is shared via your tracking).
![image-20251215-142821.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_13b31c47e74156bb3f36c49e1ec310d5393609c8e490e6942be6aeaf863afe04/image-20251215-142821.png?cb=145910eb6ed6d0c0ae053e1ee90e26ee)

You can create Product based conditions in 3 different ways:

#### Specific products

The Smart Commission tool allows you to create commission rules on a product level for your program. One option for this is to select **specific products**to add to your scheme rule.
![image-20251215-142929.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_624a480dd9cd561eee4b926fe9bf95ecd7ca536c0e2f3521e41ecdbe08a92c7a/image-20251215-142929.png?cb=a5fc103026c12955218952a5275774ce)

If you want to create a commission rule for a number of individual products, you can either **select** products (supplied from your [Product**Feed**](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/product-feed-management.md)), or you can **manually**provide a set of comma separated Product SKUs to add to the rule.
![image-20251215-143219.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_2db96775c720b48c087700ff4bfe9abc546efb0e369bdd6e04fd872b2caa4716/image-20251215-143219.png?cb=f4f908dfd6881df2ae970de8f6273942)

Any SKUs **must** match the Product Code tracked within the transaction, in order for our system to be able to identify the product as a match to the Rule.

#### Product Categories

Within our Smart Commissions tool is the option to apply commission to **Product Categories**.
![image-20251215-143348.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_df7d3c82bd7e0c2957b5e1cecceb8efd5a583296e07c282e0d335a5ef6008010/image-20251215-143348.png?cb=65c5cfa766375a9da53a0fb618798980)

If you have a Product Feed, you can use select Product Categories (as per [Google Product Categories](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/product-feed.md)) from the category list. This will apply the commission rule to any products that are in the selected categories when the commission is created, but also any new products in these categories which are added in the future, as long as the tracked product matches an item in the provided feed. For additional information, please view: [Creating Product Category Commissions](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/product-categories-smart-commission.md)

#### Product Types

Additionally within our Smart Commissions tool is the option to apply commission to **Product Types** (or, advertiser supplied categories). This can work by 'grouping' the products to a **type** in your feed.

This Product Types option allows advertisers the flexibility to set custom defined product type groups.
![image-20251215-143652.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_3a8cc89e73b26d2a82938bbd1f68ad3eb6e74812a211d03398cabdd8f3b0148e/image-20251215-143652.png?cb=0e117c7027564b83ec64b89925d1ea76)

As with Product categories, products added to the provided Product Feed with these Product types will be included in this commission rule. For more information on how to set this up, view: [Creating Product Type Commissions](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/product-types-smart-commission.md)

### **Publishers in this group**

![image-20260114-162835.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_e8d88e5639e5dd362a9c7d4022801b707302cbf7189888db64ef2d121086935b/image-20260114-162835.png?cb=7da2abd8c91b5c7ff04227b5cdbd3073)

The Publisher sites condition enables you to select a number of publisher sites within a [Commission Group](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/creating-a-publisher-commission-group.md). This enable you to create **exceptions**for Publisher sites within a Commission Group without affecting the rest of the group. This rule will sit above other rules in the Commission group so will be evaluated first.

In the above screenshot example, we are excluding 'Clearance event' from the commission rule, even though they are part of the selected commission group.

### Publisher sources

![image-20260114-104326.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_8bf087dea53e91732f8468d87d7234e4b9f30cf02f81ae92afeebed622ff4648/image-20260114-104326.png?cb=166531d993f826ce2786fabe04e5c92d)

**Publisher Sources** are referral sources sent by some Publishers within their tracking links. Most commonly this comes from sub-network [https://webgains.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/IH1/pages/3050340425/Subnetworks?atl_f=content-tree](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/subnetworks.md) publishers, who feature an advertisers links on their own list of publisher sites.
For example, a subnetwork may have their own base of affiliate sites, such as Blog X. If a sale was made via Blog X, the subnetwork publisher can send Webgains the referral information so we know the traffic came from Blog X.

If a publisher is sending us this data, then the option of setting commission based on Publisher Source will be available during the Smart Commission creation, so you can set a specific commission rate for that sub-domain site.
![image-20260113-154506.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_1ff2ee877dfc548043259e2d679103022bdc1c87961d705af9e92b3e5c008687/image-20260113-154506.png?cb=b1511bab39022cf705c22ad6e74ddb7a)

Within the commission rule creation, tick the 'Publisher Source'/s that you wish to offer the commission to (e.g. Blog X). Then, commission will only be attributed when Webgains have tracked the transaction to Blog X, via the subnetwork partner.

### Custom data

![image-20260507-092434.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_404d3cec4d56813bf19307c666188815465691efe65811112693cddb8c43c3b4/image-20260507-092434.png?cb=04023862d5c2819736128e76de5bf442)

You can provide additional custom data in your integration as Key/Value pairs. For example, you could provide additional product information that's not in your Product feed, such as Product colour, size or Brand. This custom data **must** be added to your [Webgains Tracking Script](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/webgains-default-tracking-guide.md).

You can then use logic statement to evaluate this data and tailor for your commission rule:

* **Equal to** - matches when the custom data value is exactly the same as the value you enter..

* **Not equal to** - matches when the custom data value is different from the value you enter.

* **Greater than** - matches when a numeric custom data value is higher than the value you enter.

* **Less than** - matches when a numeric custom data value is lower than the value you enter.

* **Contains** - matches when a custom data value includes the text you enter.

* **Does not contain** - matches when a custom data value does not include the text you enter.

* **Exists** - matches when the key is present in the custom data, doesn't require a value.

* **In List** - matches when the custom data value is in a list of values.

* **Not in List** - matches any custom data value, but excludes the specified values.

Custom data can be included at transaction level or against each individual item. For more information on how to send this data within your tracking, please speak to your Webgains contact/account manager.

### Legacy event

![image-20251215-145751.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_31d49c7322af519f15895e3b77f158bdccc2dd07c9c14366e7cf65d00a6e7ec2/image-20251215-145751.png?cb=a8120ff06a5cc8e8e102f36b8bb3cce1)

The Legacy event option overrides enables you to apply commission any time a pre-existing commission event is triggered. It will use the rules within an advertisers tracking that triggers the Event, but will apply the commission in the Smart Commission rule.

For example, if the advertiser had an Event set up within our former Commission Management tool that triggers different events for different customer types, the legacy event option can be used to set the commission based on these Events.

Note: Legacy events commission are less favourable than Smart Commission with their own commission rule conditions. By creating commission rules in Smart Commissions, you'll be able to see much better reporting within the Webgains platform.

Typically, these should only be used as part of migrations from Webgains older Commission Management tool to the new Smart Commissions.

Need to **Deactivate**an Active Commission Rule? Edit your scheme, and click the 3 dots, then Deactivate.
![image-20260115-094750.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_e2a2eca9f5e9da15d898427eaa5fcffdccfe2037e0d1ca021970030f5f264c2d/image-20260115-094750.png?cb=93c67548dd9b51ceaabadab0e3ec7986)

As per program Terms \& Conditions, publishers must have 30 days notice for commission changes, and so there will be a 30 day cooling down period before the commission rule is fully deactivated.

# Creating a Publisher Commission Group

**Commissions Groups** within Smart Commissions enable you to organise commission rules that apply to specific **Publishers** so can create commission schemes tailored to your specific program needs.

For example, if you want to create a different set of commission rates for CPC publishers versus Voucher publishers, you could create a **group**containing CPC publishers, and another containing Voucher publishers.

Any commission rule that is aimed at a specific list of publishers needs to be created within a **Commission Group**.

To prevent Commission Rules clashing, Publishers can only exist within **one** Commission Group at a time, and so Commission Group memberships cannot *overlap*.

Commission Groups are different from Publisher Groups (which are used to organise Publishers for communication). Publishers can exist in multiple Publisher Groups.

## Create the Group

Within the 'Manage Groups' tab, click '**Create commission group**', which will open a window for you begin the creation of your Commission Group. Start by adding a name for your Group, and selecting a colour so that you can quickly and easily recognise the Group when viewing your commission overviews and timeline.

### Add Publishers to the Group

You can then Add Publishers to the Group from within your program, by searching for Publishers within your program. You can also filter by Channel type, your [Publisher Groups](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/publisher-groups.md), and by any existing Commission Groups.

## Manage your Groups

To view and manage your groups, explore your 'Manage groups' page and see your current Groups, both those currently with active commission rules, and inactive commission rules.
![image-20260113-124631.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_fd00bff431629ad07922011e7918eb07534214a76f197cf8648b44e03ada9809/image-20260113-124631.png?cb=857cae424f853ff48787474e7ac2a792)

View which publishers are part of that group, and edit as necessary.
![image-20260113-124650.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_ef853d203d3b10617c2a5b5af0937c52a2629e084793a074931640cde58ba3b7/image-20260113-124650.png?cb=443c526ec31b472d9fe39d6aa546abc3)

You can also view the commission rules currently set up for that commission group, and jump to the timeline view with the group as a filter, so you can quickly and easily see which commissions are active/scheduled for those publishers.

# Introducing Webgains Customer Journey Report

## **Introducing the new Webgains Customer Journey Report!**

The new [**Webgains Customer Journey Report**](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/customerjourneyreport.md)provides greater insight into the customer behaviour that leads to a transaction. By tracking all of the **touchpoints** in a customer journey, the report allows advertisers to analyse exactly which Channel Types and Publisher Sites their customers are **interacting** with leading up to a purchase.
**Discover the Customer Journey Report and view an in-depth guide in how to use it:** [Customer Journey Report](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/customerjourneyreport.md)**.**

* Identify the Most Influential Channels

* Understand Cross-Channel Interactions

* Discover High-Assisting Publishers

* Reassess Publisher Performance Beyond Last-Click

* Strengthen Funnel Strategies

* Deep Dive into Individual Journeys

![image-20250519-094550.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_b7ec08c73fdcbb065fcbe7b9ef5f45cd87c9c1155aac4a94a230b7f9cf42415a/image-20250519-094550.png?cb=ab311e764d473585cb1a5f8e6accce55)

### What Can it Show?

* **Channel Distribution**per day before Purchase, to see which channels generated touchpoints in the customer journey before a purchase was made.

* **First vs Last Clicks** on both **Channel** and **Publisher**level, and see the proportion of sales which start and end with the same channel type/publisher.

* View the Customer Journey on a **Transaction**level, with each touchpoint leading to the point of sale so you can analyse the customer journey for specific transactions.

* **Assisting**Publishers, for those publishers that assisted but did not convert and who may be worth investing in additional exposure with.

![image-20250513-142932.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_aeb12532d89b1c3842c1c4e7faa2199586d77e8ea6ee4fbfbe9c338c560caf7c/image-20250513-142932.png?cb=bdd4b63d085659724f08cd7f0842b9ca)

Across all pages in the report, we are only reporting on transactions with a **tracked journey** (aside from the *Transactions* tab which includes 0-touchpoint sales), where touchpoints have been generated using the [Webgains Resilient Tracking Suite](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/resilient-tracking-suite.md), so any touchpoints that fall outside of this and or the attribution window may not be included in the data. This may exclude some transactions where there are no touchpoints to track, such as Transaction Enquiries, Manually Uploaded Transactions, or a Voucher tracked sale. For this reason, figures may differ from other transaction/performance reports.

# Creating Customer Type Commissions

When setting up your Smart Commission rule, you can set the commission to apply based on the **Customer Type.**This way, you can automatically assign a specific commission rate depending on the type of customer that made the transaction.
In order to be able to apply Customer Type commission, you must have the Customer Type configured within your [Webgains Tracking Code](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/webgains-default-tracking-guide.md) so that within a Webgains tracked sale, the customer type has been identified as either a New Customer, Existing Customer, or Custom Customer Type (for example, this could be 'Subscription').

To set this within your Smart Commission, add new Condition, and select **Customer type**:
![image-20251218-170402.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_f9f777213b52f9765e44062e53bd5ec98b9ef67798d25ccadf48f2b777ee9e45/image-20251218-170402.png?cb=2b83c534c72c51f07609ef0eaa29b9ac)

Then, select either **New** , **Existing** , or **Custom**- depending on your desired commission set up.
![image-20251218-170426.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_154387afbb51e19b57d6d01724f21936f05f4905c22f594add70fae55fdf6a70/image-20251218-170426.png?cb=3fe1791433d04a79b2b3a04d8cba6540)

If you are using the **Custom** option, the custom field entry in your Smart Commission scheme **must** match what you send us in the **Tracking**Code.

If you need to check your tracking setup, please contact your Webgains Account Manager or [support@webgains.com](mailto:support@webgains.com).

Once set up, any transactions that match the scheme configuration will apply that commission rate (in accordance with any other scheme rules in place, and priority order).
**Examples of how you can use Customer Type in Smart Commissions:**

* You'd like to offer an increased commission of 10% for **New**Customer transactions. The transaction must have the Customer type tracked as 'new', and the commission condition selected as Customer type: New.

OR

* You'd like to offer an increased commission rate of 20% for **Subscription** Customer transactions. The transaction must have the Customer type tracked as 'subscription', and the commission condition selected as Customer type: Custom, and 'subscription' entered in the text field.

You can Schedule these rates, apply to specific Publishers, apply to specific Products, or all of the above.

# Customer Journey Report for Advertisers

The new **Webgains Customer Journey Report**provides greater insight into the customer behaviour that leads to a transaction. By tracking all of the touchpoints in a customer journey, the report allows advertisers to analyse exactly which Channel Types and Publisher Sites their customers are interacting with leading up to a purchase.

Explore:

* **Channel Distribution**per day before Purchase, to see which channels generated touchpoints in the customer journey before a purchase was made.

* **First vs Last Clicks** on both **Channel** and **Publisher**level, and see the proportion of sales which start and end with the same channel type/publisher.

* View the Customer Journey on a **Transaction**level, with each touchpoint leading to the point of sale so you can analyse the customer journey for specific transactions.

* **Assisting**Publishers, for those publishers that assisted but did not convert and who may be worth investing in additional exposure with.

## Overview

The Customer Journey Report includes 3 tabs:
![image-20250507-120643.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_3cdb3dde25f299f936f743099d51c524016afed2a8fdc3f797beda909d851e90/image-20250507-120643.png?cb=f7adec5a70ddada0f4dfa887b83d3849)

Within each tab, use the Date Picker to select the timeframe you wish to view the customer journey data for. By **default** , the **dates** will be set to show data for the last 30 days. You can Edit the time range and select 'Previous', 'Last', and 'Current' to view standard timeframes. (For example, 'Last' month). Or, select Custom to add the specific dates you would like to report on.
![image-20250425-132653.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_70a5b6bd6f080f30bc0a808489c0e401797ef151219f1ae7288308be526a0d8f/image-20250425-132653.png?cb=956b4c0247f670c3e0c8d3abe9388125)

## Publisher Channels \& Overview

### KPIs

![image-20250425-110900.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_7c10c17815adeb91e3d588f7ba46ab79c57ecda375bb68de5356f95a2ee61e35/image-20250425-110900.png?cb=dacd52e75d72dddf2da516146aa85ef2)

The Publisher Channels \& Overview tab will feature 4 KPIs:

* Average Days from 1st Touchpoint to Purchase

* Average Days from Last Touchpoint to Purchase

* Max Touchpoints Found

* Average Touchpoints per Transaction

A 'touchpoint' refers to a customer action within the purchase journey. Typically this will be a Click, or a View/Impression (if your program is set-up for this).

### Channel Distribution per day before Purchase

This graph demonstrates the distribution of channels that generated touchpoints in the customer journey before a purchase was made. The X-axis shows the Days before the Purchase (here we will show as far back as the date of the first click), and the Y-axis shows the number of Touchpoints that have been generated. You can then hover over the bars to view the distribution of the touchpoints by each publisher channel.

For example, we could look at the below chart and infer that (for the specified date range) 3 days before a customer purchase, Sub-Network publishers generated the most touchpoints (357), with 32.37% share.
![image-20250519-094550.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_c4d2e8902811d6249255acf1b000d14d95458f62df6a0d1b31fbe46fba7272a1/image-20250519-094550.png?cb=ab311e764d473585cb1a5f8e6accce55)
Attribution will still be calculated based on your program cookie period (e.g. 30 days), even if we have tracked touchpoints from further in the past (e.g. 90 days).

### Channels \& Publishers: First vs Last Click - Sankey Diagrams

Within this section you will find 2 Sankey diagrams displaying the flow from First to Last Click in customer purchase journeys, for each of Publisher Channels and Individual Publishers.

You can examine the journeys between First Click and Last Click (Attributed click) for each Channel Type/Publisher, and see the proportion of sales which start and end with the same channel type/publisher (both first click and last click are the same colour), and view cases where the customer journeys starts with one channel type/publisher and ends with another.

This may be useful for advertisers looking at which publishers to invest in, as we can see where the customer started, and where they ended up clicking right before making the purchase.

These charts can be filtered by the **Sliding Scales** at the top of the report page to display how many elements you wish to view. The default is 10, minimum is 5, and maximum is 15.
![image-20250425-140605.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_86a71c9373a3586c58b8245103fecff0ac1dadf24acba9e20579f822d4de4ee9/image-20250425-140605.png?cb=1351dbaf61198674671fa73b2a578c8c)

For easier viewing, you can also click and drag the entities in the Sankey diagram to clearly see the path.

When you hover over each section, the Total Sales Value will be displayed, representing the value generated by the touchpoints in your current selection.
![image-20250515-102536.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_b0835e9be4892c85c76858c3816c47be1b3e45463883fc1370a19052d5b9ad0c/image-20250515-102536.png?cb=cab7629ae3abc6bb19c103dc2a5b29a0)
'OTHER' will represent any Channel Type/Publisher outside of the current filter scope. So, if you have filtered on the sliding scale to 5 elements, 4 Channels/Publishers will show and all others will be grouped into the 'OTHER' element.

#### Example Journey

![merged_with_borders-20250515-112821.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_77ab674248c4398f6e740c6af4c5525ce1567be4d24b31803af154a8836ef05e/merged_with_borders-20250515-112821.png?cb=5616a359d385c0397ce1b1fb306abcf7)

In this example we can firstly see that there is a total value of £13.9k where a Voucher Code publisher was the first click in a transaction.

Then, some of these branch off to a Last Click by a Cashback publisher. We can see that £5k of the Voucher Code first clicks are then being converted by a Cashback publisher, with Cashback publishers overall converting £40k in sales value.
![image-20250515-103539.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_1ad0564c99e36b89840ad13811a775db8e82ec0f64149399d413ea52bba67612/image-20250515-103539.png?cb=ff72cac6efde79fc432098cb1db5a36d)

Hover over the large black bar to view the Total Sales Value for the period across Channel Types.
Please note that the Total Sales Value for the last click and all of the purchases includes customer journeys with 0 touchpoints (e.g. manually uploaded transactions) and 1 touchpoint (e.g. where we only have a first click and no last click)

### Donut Charts - First \& Last Click

We also include Donut Charts to view a direct comparison between the First and Last Clicks between Channels and Publishers.

The segment size represents the % share of the First/Last Click.

The SUM(total_value) represents the sum of all transaction values where the first click was created by that Channel/Publisher. (In the example below, 31.8k value was generated by a Voucher Code 1st Click).

The % value represents the percentage of all transactions where that Channel/Publisher was the 1st Click. (In the example below, 36% of all transactions had Voucher Code channel as 1st click).
![image-20250513-142932.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_c46ebc384374e30430f49f939b1f452a8271bef62e76db66667518a36ae50503/image-20250513-142932.png?cb=bdd4b63d085659724f08cd7f0842b9ca)

## Transactions \> Customer Journey

The Transactions table provides an overview of transactions generated within the selected date range, and if you then click on a Transaction ID from the 1st table, the 2nd table (**Customer Journey per Transaction**) will update to display a breakdown of the touchpoints for that transaction.
![image.jpg](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_93c8b5fb92b3113ff4c1d0f56cce2ce6a2579f52a4c67ac9386c031334a097e6/image.jpg?cb=600f0a3bffccacbd83fad04251fa94bf)

The first listed rows will show the higher steps - these are the **first** touchpoints in the customer journey. Each subsequent touchpoint will then be listed, displaying the time between each touchpoint and which publisher generated it, until we reach the final touchpoint from the publisher that was attributed the sale. Step **0**will represent the Last Click, with the Highest Step representing the First Click in the customer journey.
![image-20250425-113747.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_8faac35cdd1134a9c5011cc2242025cc14a692495a4b2bf77d21fb0b30503db1/image-20250425-113747.png?cb=dc20844f74cd3052930ceee2e1601328)

This allows advertisers to analyse the customer journey for specific transactions, such as checking those with the highest sales values to see what led the customer to the point of purchase.

If a program is set up on Post View attribution, you will see 'View' listed as the Type when inspecting the transaction, like below:
![image-20250515-103248.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_e23f6fde2915ddf67d24ffd86b73148cb293699675f6490a5f4679d8ef286d86/image-20250515-103248.png?cb=597af6c0655386f1e2317aef62793095)
\`
Across all pages in the report, please remember we are only reporting on transactions with a **tracked journey**. For this reason, figures may differ from other transaction/performance reports.

If you notice a transaction with 0 touchpoints, this could be for a few reasons. Most commonly, it might be that the transaction was manually uploaded (e.g. via batch upload, or transaction enquiries), meaning that there are no touchpoints in the journey. Other reasons include:

* API tracked sale.

* Voucher Commission (as the transaction is attributed based on the specific voucher code used in the sale).

* Occasionally, missing data.

Transactions with just 1 touchpoint only have a last click and no first click.

## Assisting Publishers

This page helps to identify and analyse the performance of publishers that have assisted (generated touchpoints) in transactions.

### Top Assisting Publishers

This table displays a list of top publishers, within the specified date range, that generated touchpoints in transactions.

The '**Assisted Transactions**' column represents publishers who have generated touchpoints in transactions but were not attributed the sale. That is, they lost the sale to another publisher for the last click.

The '**Converted Transactions**' column represents publishers who were attributed transactions. That is, they were the last-click before the customer made a purchase and so were awarded the commission.

Also shown in this table are the number of tenancies and total tenancy value for each publisher during the selected period.
![image-20250519-094204.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_9b5f4f09a562055ed21adaa420e4ab5aa18ecb9fdf05671a2d820b2850264d8b/image-20250519-094204.png?cb=82f5d45ca60a611d8f6c0ae87539c3e6)

Publishers with very high 'Assisted Transactions Value' but very low converted transactions might be important touchpoints that contribute towards transactions - even if they're rarely the final click before a purchase.

The publisher may have helped with awareness of your store or a particular product you sell and it could be worth investing in a tenancy or additional exposure with the publisher.

### Tenancies during period \& Tenancies Scheduled

Tenancies that occurred within the selected date range will display in the Tenancies table, according to what was added within Webgains [++Tenancy Planner++](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/how-do-i-use-the-tenancy-planner-in-webgains.md) tool. The Tenancies Scheduled table will display Tenancies outside of the date range selection, so that a full record of scheduled and processed tenancies is displayed.

For any completed tenancies, clicks and transactions from the tenancy period will be reported, so that you can compare with the Assisting Publishers table and assess performance of tenancies/additional exposure with publishers.

In some cases, if a Publisher has not set their Channel Type, you may see it displayed as 'Unverified' within the report pages. This just means that the publisher has not been categorised yet.

# What is a De-duplication Policy?

**Deduplication** is when an advertiser sets up a 'rule' to ensure that a conversion is only attributed to one marketing channel, even though multiple touchpoints may have been involved.

Before implementing any deduping solution, the advertiser should discuss with their Webgains Account Manager about the need for deduplication and any potential impacts on the program.

Advertisers must disclose their deduplication policy to Webgains before launching a program, and it's best practice to include the policy within program T\&Cs/descriptions so that publishers are informed.

Likewise, if any changes to the deduplication policy are made at any stage, Webgains must be informed and any program T\&Cs must be updated.

For guidance on implementing any deduplication with Webgains, please contact your account manager or [support@webgains.com](mailto:support@webgains.com).

The AI model factors in multiple data points, including:

* **Vertical/Category:** Aligns program suggestions with the sectors and categories you already perform well in.

* **Marketing Channels:** Considers your marketing channel (i.e. content, voucher, influencer) and which channels the advertiser program supports.

* **Publisher Behaviour:** Looks at the kinds of programs you already work with, those you've previously applied to or performed well on.

* **Exploration Mode:** Discover doesn't just replicate your existing patterns -- it also introduces **new programs and verticals** where similar publishers are seeing strong results, helping you grow into new areas.

**Additional Considerations:**

* **Network Memberships / Regions:** Recommendations are limited to programs that are available to your joined country network/s.

* **Revenue \& Activity:** Discover prioritises **revenue-active** and high-performing programs, increasing the likelihood that new partnerships will convert and grow.

* **Refresh Frequency:** New recommendations are generated every **Monday**.

  * The number of recommendations may be lower in some weeks if there aren't enough strong matches -- this is to keep suggestions **relevant and high quality**.

  * If no new recommendations are available, you'll see a **"Check back soon"** message showing the date of the next refresh.

  * It's possible to see similar recommendations from previous weeks if your behaviour still indicates a strong fit, and you have not downvoted the program.

* **Status Display:** Program statuses (e.g. *Applied* , *Joined*) remain visible on recommendation cards until the next refresh cycle -- they won't disappear instantly once you take action.

Each recommendation is categorised and ranked based on how strong a match it is for you as a publisher, with ordering based on overall match strength according to the AI's assessment:

1. **Top Picks** -- Your best program matches

2. **Great Matches** -- Strong potential for performance

3. **Good Matches** -- Solid, slightly broader opportunities

If you give a recommendation a **Thumbs Down**, our AI learns from your feedback and adjusts future recommendations -- reducing the chance of seeing similar programs again.
![image-20260116-152926.png](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/__attachments/a_1e338249ff623d85349925ea5af6076433986f7c331eef2e2c3d3513a84091aa/image-20260116-152926.png?cb=5a059f739fcecc701c0fe4454c2cf125)

*If you have previously had a membership with a program but are since Left or Rejected status, then this program will not show in Discover recommendation results.*

### Program Cards

For each recommended program, Discover displays a **program card** with key information to help you quickly decide if it's a good fit. This typically includes:

* Program Name

* Average Order Value (displayed in that program's currency)

* Conversion rate

  * Discover highlights the program's indicative commission setup, helping you quickly judge whether it fits your monetisation strategy.

* Commission offering

Click **"View Details"** to see more information about the program, including its description, terms, and website. Click **"Join"** to start your application or membership process with that program directly from Discover.

### Using Discover Alongside Other Tools

Use **Discover** together with the main **Programs**page for the best results:

* **Discover:** For AI-curated, specific **program recommendations** based on your behaviour and performance.

* **Programs:** For manual exploration when you already know which brands, categories or regions you want to target.

Once you have applied to or joined a program from Discover, it will appear in the **Programs** page under the relevant status filter.

### Recommendations for New Publishers

For **new publishers** without much historical activity or performance data, Discover operates in an **exploratory mode**.

In this mode, the AI model bases recommendations on:

* Known information about your account (e.g. your declared **channel type(s)**, categories and regions), and

* Broader insights from **program popularity and performance** across the network for publishers similar to you.

This ensures even brand-new publishers receive a **meaningful, diverse set of program recommendations** from day one, helping you get started quickly and focus on opportunities most likely to convert.

Please be advised that at this time, due to GDPR requirements, Webgains Discover tool cannot provide publishers with program recommendations if the account is listed as an Individual.

# Understanding Discrepancies Between Google Analytics 4 and Webgains

**Businesses often encounter discrepancies between metrics reported in Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and affiliate platforms like Webgains or marketing platforms like Meta or LinkedIn.**These inconsistencies can make it difficult to accurately assess the true performance of various marketing channels, especially when affiliate-driven conversions appear lower in GA4. For companies relying on performance metrics to allocate budgets, refine strategies, or evaluate partnerships, understanding and addressing these discrepancies can unlock greater clarity and confidence in decision-making.

The following sections outline key factors causing these differences and provide actionable solutions to enhance data consistency. By understanding the root causes, businesses can better interpret data from each platform and make informed decisions.

*** ** * ** ***

## Key Issues Leading to Data Discrepancies

### Attribution Models: Last Click vs. Multi-Touch

GA4 and affiliate platforms like Webgains use distinct methods to assign credit for conversions, often leading to data discrepancies. GA4's multi-touch model offers a comprehensive view by distributing credit across multiple touchpoints, while Webgains credits the final click before conversion.

For businesses, this means that GA4 may show lower conversion rates for affiliate channels, undervaluing their impact. Adjusting GA4's attribution model to match Webgains' last-click approach can help reconcile these differences, giving a clearer picture of the effectiveness of affiliate channels and avoiding misguided cuts to affiliate budgets based on incomplete data.

### Event-Based vs. Conversion-Focused Tracking

GA4's event-based model logs each interaction, such as clicks and page views, as a separate event. Affiliate platforms, however, focus primarily on the final conversion point, like a click leading directly to a sale.

For businesses focused on the overall journey (like brand awareness and engagement before purchase), GA4 offers detailed behavioral insights that can shape top-of-funnel strategies. However, if conversion performance is the primary goal, relying more on Webgains' conversion-focused data may better align with direct ROI tracking, highlighting where affiliates contribute directly to sales.

### Privacy Regulations and Cookie-Based Tracking

Strict privacy laws impact GA4's cookie-based tracking, which limits visibility into certain user interactions. Webgains, however, often uses cookie-free tracking links, allowing for more complete tracking in restricted environments.

For businesses, this gap emphasizes the need to diversify tracking methods and possibly consider server-side tracking, especially for markets with strict privacy regulations. Understanding these privacy-based discrepancies ensures businesses don't underreport traffic and conversions, leading to more accurate channel evaluations and optimized budget allocations across regions.

### Real-Time Data Reporting vs. Data Lag

GA4's data lag can be up to 24 hours, while Webgains provides near-real-time tracking. This timing difference can cause temporary discrepancies, especially during promotions or high-traffic periods.

For businesses running time-sensitive campaigns, relying on real-time affiliate data can ensure quick, accurate adjustments. Recognizing these timing differences helps avoid premature decisions based on delayed data and optimizes in-campaign adjustments.

### Ad-Blockers and Script Limitations

Since GA4's JavaScript-based tracking can be blocked by ad-blockers, some user interactions go unrecorded. Webgains' link-based tracking bypasses most ad-blockers, offering a more comprehensive view of user behavior.

Businesses catering to privacy-conscious audiences can benefit by leaning on affiliate data, which may capture a more complete picture of traffic and engagement that GA4 misses. Understanding this difference can provide a more realistic view of affiliate-driven performance and help in choosing tracking solutions that align with their audience's preferences.

### Conversion Definitions: Varying Criteria

GA4 allows custom conversions, like page views and cart additions, while Webgains counts only final conversions, like completed transactions.

These definitional differences help companies choose the right platform to evaluate performance based on their specific goals. For brand engagement, GA4's custom events may be more relevant, whereas for direct conversions, Webgains' focused tracking offers more precise data.

## Solutions to Address Discrepancies

The above differences create challenges, but implementing the right solutions can help businesses align data across both platforms, maximizing insights and accuracy:

* **Adjust Attribution Settings:** Matching GA4's attribution model with Webgains' last-click approach can bring affiliate performance data into better alignment, avoiding undervaluing affiliate channels and enabling clearer decision-making.

* **Standardize UTM Parameters:** Consistent UTM tracking across platforms minimizes misattribution and makes data comparison smoother, enhancing channel evaluations.

* **Conduct Regular Data Audits:** Routine data checks with tools like Google Data Studio help detect patterns or anomalies, improving cross-platform clarity and catching issues early.

* **Implement Server-Side Tracking:** Reducing reliance on cookies addresses privacy law impacts and enhances data accuracy, particularly in regions with stringent privacy regulations.

* **Use Affiliate Platform Data as Primary Source:** Since affiliate platforms are built specifically to track affiliate-driven traffic, relying on their data for affiliate reporting can provide a more accurate picture for evaluating affiliate partnerships.

* **Consult with Affiliate Tracking Experts:** For persistent discrepancies, expert input can help optimize tracking configurations and uncover hidden issues, ensuring reliable data.

*** ** * ** ***

## Understanding discrepancies from a different perspective

Imagine your business as a retail shop with multiple entrances, each representing a different marketing channel guiding customers into your store. Let's explore how these discrepancies play out in this analogy:

1. **Attribution Models: Credit for Every Entrance**

Think of each entrance as a unique path to the sale. GA4 acknowledges all doors a customer enters through before purchasing, distributing credit among them. Webgains, however, credits only the final entrance. This approach leads GA4 to record lower affiliate-driven conversions, as it credits multiple channels for a single sale.
2. **Counting Clicks: Tracking Engagement Levels**

Every affiliate click represents a customer opening a door to the shop. Webgains logs every door opened, even if they don't enter fully. GA4, however, only logs actual entries, leading to higher click counts in Webgains and potential confusion.
3. **Privacy Settings: "Name Tag" Limitations**

Cookies serve as "name tags" for returning visitors, but privacy regulations often remove these. GA4 might not recognize returning customers due to cookie restrictions, while Webgains' link-based tracking allows more comprehensive recognition, especially in regions with strict privacy laws.
4. **Reporting Delays: Real-Time vs. Delayed Updates**

GA4 operates with a lag, like a shop that updates visitor counts later. Webgains, with near real-time tracking, reflects performance immediately, especially useful during promotions or events.
5. **Effects of Ad-Blockers: Untracked Customers**

Ad-blockers prevent some visitors from being logged in GA4, while Webgains, with link-based tracking, bypasses blockers to record more interactions.
6. **Definitions of Key Actions: Conversion Variety**

GA4 treats browsing or cart additions as conversion-worthy actions, while Webgains might log only checkouts. This results in differing conversion counts and can complicate direct comparisons.

*** ** * ** ***

## Conclusion

Understanding and addressing the causes of discrepancies between GA4 and affiliate platforms like Webgains offers significant value. By aligning tracking methods, configuring attribution settings, and performing routine audits, businesses can achieve greater clarity in their data and confidence in their strategic decisions.

GA4 provides a detailed, multi-touch view, while affiliate platforms excel at last-click conversions. Together, these tools allow for a holistic view of user behavior across the entire journey, from initial touchpoints to final purchase.

Aligning data across platforms not only improves reporting accuracy but also optimizes marketing investments. This integrated approach helps businesses leverage each platform's unique insights, driving better budgeting, strategic planning, and, ultimately, improved marketing outcomes across channels.

# Do I need to set up MFA on my account?

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) is mandatory for all Administrator level publisher users on Webgains, as it provides a second layer of security by asking you to enter a code from your smartphone every time you log in, so we know it's you every time.

The MFA can be set up on one device/authenticator app per User account. It's recommended to use an authentication app to generate the one-time passcode (OTP) such as: Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator (Android or iOS), or Twilo Authy Authenticator.

The app or tool will prompt you to scan the QR code shown in your Webgains login page, and then once scanned it will generate unique OTPs for you to use in the Webgains login. Each code is only valid for a short period of time, so be sure to enter it promptly into Webgains once generated from the app.
Read more on how to set up MFA: [How do I set up MFA on my Publisher Account?](https://knowledgehub.webgains.com/home/how-do-i-set-up-mfa.md)

It is not required for lower permission levels, such as Editor role. For more information on the MFA process please contact [publisherteam@webgains.com](mailto:publisherteam@webgains.com).
